Listen, LORD, to my cry for help. Lord GOD, my strong Savior,
You shield my head on the day of battle (Psalm 140:5-7)
In the year 2005, the coastal states in the Southeast braced
for a major hurricane named Katrina. While many people diecided to evacuate, they first took the time to board up their homes and businesses. They knew the storms were coming and wanted to protect the places where they lived and worked.
On the newcasts my husband and I saw people hammering boards in place over windows even as the rain began to fall. Two days later, thousands were homeless, having lost everything to wind and water. All around us was damage, with 100 mile an hour winds, trees blowing down, lost of power so long you lost everything in your freezers and refrigerators, was so hot you could hardly stay in the house and just as hot it seemed outside.
We live about 80 miles from the coastline and had much damage all around.
As we prayed for the people who were suffering because of the hurricane, I thought about the storms that come to us all. Just as we know hurricanes will hit America's coastlines form time to time, I don't always know when they will come or what they will look like. I only know that storms are guaranteed.
I asked the Lord to help me prepare for those difficult times when I will go through trials and storms. I prayed for wisdom to know how to prepare and for the strength to endure whatever storms He allows to come into my life. I also asked Him to shape my character and to help me grow during difficult times.
We are going through some of those difficult times now as well as my family. While some people believe that as Christians, trouble will somehow bypass us, that's not what the Bible teaches. Jesus said, "You will have suffering in this world"
(John 16:33).
Everyone probably has a friend or relative who has gone through a divorce, financial difficulties, job loss, serious illness, the death of a loved one, or some other trial.
Since we know these storms will come, how can we prepare for them? Take time each day not only lay your request before Him, but also to listen to Him. Second, stay in the Word (Paslm 119:105). And although pain sometimes makes people feel like isolating themselves, this is a very unwise move. Stay connected to other Christians, and accept help when it's needed.
Father, You are my refuge and my strength, a helper who is
always found in times of trouble. Therefore I will not be afraid
(Psalm 46:1-2) Say this prayer all through the day.
Love, Norma
