- JOHN ON PATMOS
John the apostle was the author of the book of Revelation. He is depicted as a lone disciple of Jesus Christ on the isle of Patmos. He was banished to the isle for the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus. He was first sentenced at Rome to die in a caldron of boiling oil; but the God that delivered the Hebrews from the fiery furnace restrained the heat of the oil, and John was unharmed (according to tradition).
The isle of Patmos was located in the Aegean Sea, approximately twenty-four miles off the coast of Asia Minor. It is now known as the land of Turkey. The isle was in the shape of a horseshoe, and the waters moved into the inlet of the isle.
While John was on the isle of Patmos, he was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day–the first day of the week. He heard the voice of Jesus speaking to him, saying, “I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last; and, what thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia, REV. 1:11...SAYING, "I AM ALPHA AND OMEGA, THE FIRST AND THE LAST; AND, WHAT THOU SEEST, WRITE IN A BOOK, AND SEND IT UNTO THE SEVEN CHURCHES WHICH ARE IN ASIA; UNTO EPHESUS, AND UNTO SMYRNA, AND UNTO PERGAMOS, AND UNTO THYATIRA, AND UNTO SARDIS, AND UNTO PHILADELPHIA."
John was instructed to write the book and send it unto the seven churches (local bodies) in Asia; Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicca.
When John saw Jesus standing before him in His symbolic glorification, he was amazed to see the Lord on the isle. John fainted at the feet of Jesus. The Lord laid His right hand upon John and said, “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for ever more.” REVELATION 1:18." I AM HE THAT LIVELTH, AND WAS DEAD; AND, BEHOLD, I AM ALIVE FOR EVERMORE, AMEN; AND HAVE THE KEYS OF HELL AND OF DEATH."
The vision of the seven churches reminded John of his own work in Asia Minor. John was the founder of all seven churches. The spiritual aspects of each church was selected to represent the different periods of the Church Age, beginning with the apostolic or Ephesus dispensation. I hope I can write the study on the book of Revelations where you can understand it. Have a great day. (Shepherd)
