LISTENING TO THE VOICE OF GOD
[1] INTRODUCTION
We spoke last week about how God speaks to us. Today, we are going to look at this very important topic, “HOW DO WE HEAR THE VOICE OF THE LORD AND HOW CAN WE BE SURE THAT IT IS HIM SPEAKING.” This is a very important subject and one that many people are asking. I believe that we can know whether it is God, the devil, or our own thoughts. We will look at this subject today, although we can not completely cover this subject.
[2] HOW DO WE KNOW THAT HE SPEAKS TO US?
SCRIPTURE: “The watchman opens the door for this Man, and the sheep listen to His voice and heed it.
When he has brought His own sheep outside, he walks on before them, and the sheep follow Him because they know His voice.”
“The sheep that are My own hear and are listening to My voice and I know them and they follow Me” [JOHN 10: 3, 4, 27, AMP].
If we are children of God, and listening for His voice, we will hear Him. A child, even a toddler learns to hear the voice of his parents. Similarly, a child of God lsoon learns to recognize the voice of Abba Father,
[c] In order to hear from God, we must follow Him. We must stay close to Him so we can hear every Word that He speaks. Have you ever been in a group of people walking along, maybe on a tour of some interesting place. You are way back in the group and the guide or leader is at the very front talking and you couldn’t understand what was being said. This is a good picture of our relationship to Jesus Christ. We must stay close to Him. He wants us to come to Him as we are, a little child.
[3] WE MUST OPEN THE DOOR OF OUR MIND AND SPIRIT
As the Scripture states above, “The watchman opens the door for this Man.”
We must open the door for this Man, [Jesus Christ]. Listen to this Scripture: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears and listens to and heeds my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he [will eat] with Me” This Scripture has been used evangelistically, that is in reference to opening the door to be saved, and it does mean that, I believe that it means much more. He wants us to open the door to Him and let Him come and have fellowship with Him.
[4] THE SHEEP ARE LISTENING
What does the word, “listen” mean? In the original language of the New Testament, this word means, ‘To hear, hearken, pay close attention, to understand, to hear with the ear of the mind, to hear effectually so as to perform or grant what is spoken” [See John 9:31].
Are we listening? Do we expect to hear His voice? Do we hope to hear Him speak to us. The Biblical definition of “hope” is something we desire and expect to receive, the joyful expectation of something good.”
[c] Victoria Boyson in a recent E mail article titled, “Friendship with God,” made the following comment: “In order to hear from God, we must spend time in His presence. People need to hear from God, they need to hear the Word of the Lord. We can only hear from God if we spend time with Him. We can only hear from Him if we have a relationship with Him. Our relationship to God is the most important thing in our lives, therefore, we need to give it the utmost care.”
[5] WE MUST CHOOSE TO LISTEN
God didn’t create us to be robots. He wants us to come to Him deliberately and of our own free will. He wants to show us His love and He wants us to love Him.
“I spoke to you in your prosperity and, but you said ‘I will not listen! This has been your practice from your youth; that you have not obeyed My voice”[Jeremiah 22:21, NASB].
[c] [See PSALM 95:7;Isaiah 28:23; Ezekial 8:18; Micah 6:1, 9; Hebrews 3:15,, NASB].
[d] All through much of the Old Testament, many times, God would come and bless the children of Israel. They would be very prosperous, then they stopped listening to God and would worship other gods and go astray, until He would come and bring judgment to them. This is still true for the New Testament Christian. We are blessed and become prosperous, then we stop listening to the voice of the Lord. God will eventually come and bring judgment if we do not repent, and start listening to His voice.
