THE FAITH OF THE CENTURION
MARCH 28, 2009
SRIPTURE: Matthew 8:5-13 (Amplified Bible)
[5] “As Jesus went into Capernaum, a centurion came up to Him, begging Him,
[6] And saying, Lord, my servant boy is lying at the house paralyzed and distressed with intense pains.
[7] And Jesus said to him, I will come and restore him.
[8]But the centurion replied to Him, Lord, I am not worthy or fit to have You come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant boy will be cured.
[9] For I also am a man subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my slave, Do this, and he does it.
[10]When Jesus heard him, He marveled and said to those who followed Him [who adhered steadfastly to Him, conforming to His example in living and, if need be, in dying also], I tell you truly, I have not found so much faith as this with anyone, even in Israel.
[11] I tell you, many will come from east and west, and will sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven,
[12] While the sons and heirs of the kingdom will be driven out into the darkness outside, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.
[13] Then to the centurion Jesus said, Go; it shall be done for you as you have believed. And the servant boy was restored to health at that very moment.”
[II] AMAZING FAITH
This is an amazing story of faith, honor, humility, and compassion. I have looked at this Scripture and heard it taught and preached many times, yet there seems to be always more revelation coming forth. What do I see in this passage? I do not have the time to speak about all the things that I see in this Scripture, but I will elaborate on a few of them.
It is always God’s will to heal.
It seems that I say this a lot, but I believe that it is absolutely vital that we see this. If I do not know whether or not it is God’s will to heal, then how can I pray in faith? There are a number of Scriptures that show that it is God’s will to heal, [Matthew 6:10; Isaiah 53:4-5].
Jesus, said the He only did what He saw the Father do, and only said what he heard the Father say. So Jesus spent a large part of His ministry healing people. He healed all that came to Him for healing.
The Compassion of Jesus
Compassion is mercy and pity in action. There is an intense desire to do something.. Jesus had compassion on people. He taught them, he healed them and He rescued and healed them [JOHN 14:14-20]
We see the compassion of Jesus in this passage of Scripture. Jesus didn’t say, “Well, I don’t know whether I have the time today or not or I don’t know if it is My Father’s will or not. He said, “I will come and restore him.” [Matthew 8:7]
[C] The Compassion of the Centurion
We see something of the character of the Centurion in this Scripture. He had compassion on his servant who was paralyzed and in intense pain. He came to Jesus and begged Him to heal the servant.
[D] The Humility of the Centurion
We see the genuine humility of the Centurion when he said, “Lord, I am not worthy or fit that You should come under my roof ------.” [Matthew 8:8]. I believe that he saw the humility of Jesus and he honored Him.
None of us are worthy within ourselves, but we have Jesus Christ living in us, and he is worthy. He has given His worthiness to us. It is only because we are a New Creation in Christ, that we can have His worthiness. This unworthiness can be a cop-out. Some people may say, “OH, I AM SO UNWORTHY, God would never do anything for me. It doesn’t take any faith to say that.
[E] The Faith of the Centurion.
Jesus marveled or was amazed at the faith of the Centurion. I believe that Jesus recognized that the Centurion had faith, because he recognized the importance and the authority in the words that he spoke and the honor and reverence that he had. I believe that faith involves trusting and obeying God and His Word.
The Scripture does not say, but I believe that the Centurion knew Jesus or knew a lot about His ministry, miracles, signs and wonders. He may have met him somewhere before and he may have seen in person what Jesus was doing.
[F] The Authority of Words.
The Centurion said, “Speak the Word only, and my servant boy will be cured [healed]. He knew the authority of his words, [“For I am also a man subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, ‘Go’ and he goes; and to another ‘Come’ and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this’ and he does it” [Matthew 8:8-9].
I believe that the Centurion in essence was saying, [though he may not have put it into words], “Jesus, I know the importance of words. I see the authority of my words, and I see the authority of your words. Your authority is in the realm of the Spirit. You say to this person, ‘You are healed and he is totally restored, and You say to this evil spirit, Go, and it goes. I realize that You are under the authority of Your Father, and as a result, You have authority. Your authority is so much greater than mine. All You have to do is just speak the Word and my servant will be healed.
[c] You probably know that the word of God is alive. [Look at Hebrews 4:12]. Sometimes, we hear Jesus speak to us occasionally audibly, but usually in that still small voice. However, we already have His Word and it is alive, the Bible, the written Word of God.. HE SPEAKS TO US TODAY, THROUGH HIS WRITTEN WORD! As we read, study, and meditate on the Word of God, the Holy Spirit speaks to us. We need to learn to appreciate the authority of the Word of God.
[d] When we as sons and daughters of the Most High God recognize the importance and the authority of the Word of God, speak the Word of God in faith, trusting Him, we will see more people saved, healed, and set free. We will see more of the signs that makes you wonder. That is where I want to be.
[e] WE CAN AND WILL DO THESE THINGS, BUT ONLY THROUGH JESUS CHRIST! SPEAK THE WORD OF GOD OVER SICKNESS AND DISEASE S AND WATCH HEALING COME! SPEAK THE WORD OF GOD OVER YOUR FINANCES! SPEAK THE WORD OF GOD TO THAT MOUNTAIN IN YOUR LIFE AND WATCH IT MOVE! When we recognize the authority of the Word then we will see with our natural eyes these things will happen .
[IV] INVITATION AND PRAYER
As I mentioned before in verse 7, that Jesus said, “I will come and heal him.” I believe that he is saying to each of us today, “I WILL COME AND HEAL YOU NOW!” He is just that eager to heal you today, to restore you, to set you free. Do you hear Him speaking to you now?
