PAUL BOUND IN CHAINS
ACTS 21:33...THEN THE CHIEF CAPTAIN CAME NEAR, AND TOOK HIM, AND COMMANDED HIM TO BE BOUND WITH TWO CHAINS; AND DEMANDED WHO HE WAS, AND WHAT HE HAD DONE.
The Commander went over to Paul, arrested him, and ordered him to be tied up with two chains. Then he asked, who is this man, and what has he done? The commander must not have known Paul. He thought he had committed some crime.
That is why he had him chained. The commander was doing what the devil wanted him to do. The devil was trying to stop the word of the Lord.
ACTS 21:34-36....AND SOME CRIED ONE THING, SOME ANOTHER, AMONG THE MULTITUDE; AND WHEN HE COULD NOT KNOW THE CERTAINTY FOR THE TUMULT, HE COMMANDED HIM TO BE CARRIED INTO THE CASTLE. AND WHEN HE CAME UPON THE STAIRS, SO IT WAS, THAT HE WAS BORNE OF THE SOLDIERS FOR THE VIOLENCE OF THE PEOPLE. FOR THE MULTITUDE OF THE PEOPLE FOLLOWED AFTER, CRYING, AWAY WITH HIM.
Some of the people shouted one thing others something else. There was a great confusion that the commander could not find out exactly what had happened; so he ordered his men to take Paul up into the fort. They got with him to the steps, and then the soldiers had to carry him because the mob was so wild. They were all coming after him an screaming , kill him. They wanted him dead. That is just like the devil. He does not want us to have any thing to do with God so if we will let him he will push us now into the mud so deep that he thinks that we cannot get out, but God can deliver us out of any problem. That is why we need to be close to God like Paul, and he will help us to overcome.
ACTS 21:37...AND AS PAUL WAS TO BE LED INTO THE CASTLE, HE SAID UNTO THE CHIEF CAPTAIN, MAY I SPEAK UNTO THEE? WHO SAID, CAN THOU SPEAK GREEK?
As they were about to take Paul into the fort, he spoke to the commander; “May I say something to you.” And the commander said to him “do you speak Greek?” The commander thought he had a common criminal, but a common criminal, would not have been able to speak Greek that fluent.
ACTS 21:38...ART NOT THOU THAT EGYPTIAN, WHICH BEFORE THESE DAYS MADE AN UPROAR, AND LED OUT INTO THE WILDNESS FOUR THOUSAND MEN THAT WERE MURDERERS.
Then you are not that Egyptian fellow who some time ago started a revolution and led four thousand armed terrorists out into the desert? The commander thought that Paul was a mob leader, one of the protesters taking a mob out into the country. The devil sure was trying to stop Paul. That is just like him, try to pull down God’s followers.
ACTS 21:39...BUT PAUL SAID, I AM A MAN WHICH AM A JEW OF TARSUS, A CITY IN CILICIA, A CITIZEN OF NO MEAN CITY; AND , I BESEECH THEE, SUFFER ME TO SPEAK UNTO THE PEOPLE.
Paul answered; “I am a jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, a citizen of an important city, please, let me speak to the people.” Paul speaks Greek, but he informs the commander that he was a Jew. So when the commander heard this who Paul is he said sure go ahead and speak to them. I believe that God stepped in and let the commander know that he was speaking the truth.
ACTS 21:40...AND WHEN HE HAD GIVEN HIM LICENSE, PAUL STOOD ON THE STAIRS, AND BECKONED WITH THE HAND UNTO THE PEOPLE, AND WHEN THERE WAS MADE A GREAT SILENCE, HE SPAKE UNTO THEM IN THE HEBREW TONGUE. SAYING.
The commander gave him permission, so Paul stood on the steps and motioned with his hand to the people. when they were quiet, Paul spoke to them in Hebrew.
When Paul began to speak to them in Hebrew they language they love and under-stand, they listen to him.
What I get from this lesson today is that the devil will fight us with every thing he can to stop us from serving God. But as Paul did we need to make up our mind that we are going to serve God regardless of what they do to us. Trials like this lets us know that we can depend on God for help in time of need. And He will give us the power to stand any trial we face.
