PAUL’S DEFENSE BEFORE THE MOB
ACTS 22:1-2....MEN, BRETHREN, AND FATHERS, HEAR YE MY DEFENSE WHICH I MAKE NOW UNTO YOU. ( AND WHEN THEY HEARD THAT HE SPAKE IN THE HEBREW TONGUE TO THEM, THEY KEPT THE MORE SILENCE; AND HE SAITH).
Paul said men, brothers and fathers, listen to me as I make my defense before you. When they heard him speaking to them in Hebrew, they were even quieter; and Paul went on. When he begin to speak Hebrew they got quiet and listen to him. They listen to him because he was one of them.
ACTS 22:3....I AM VERILY A MAN WHICH AM A JEW, BORN IN TARSUS, A CITY IN CILICIA, YET BROUGHT UP IN THIS CITY AT THE FEET OF GAMALIEL, AND TAUGHT ACCORDING TO THE PERFECT MANNER OF THE LAW OF THE FATHERS, AND WAS ZEALOUS TOWARD GOD, AS YE ALL ARE THIS DAY.
Paul told them that he was a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but he was brought up there is Jerusalem as a student of Gamaliel, and he received strict instruction in the law of their ancestors, and was just as dedicated to God as all of them here today are.
Paul was being persecuted by the Jewish leaders and by religious leaders. But Paul told them that he had been one of them, and that he had been a Pharisee. He was showing them why he had so much sympathy for them, and why he was so loving toward them, because he understood them, and that he wants to win them for Christ.
ACTS 22:4....AND I PERSECUTED THIS WAY UNTO THE DEATH, BINDING AND DELIVERING INTO PRISONS BOTH MEN AND WOMEN.
Paul told them that he persecuted to death the people who followed the Christian way. He said that he arrested men and women and threw them into prison. What did he mean when he said THIS WAY. It is the way, the truth, and the life. It is the person of the Lord Jesus.
ACTS 22:5-7...AS ALSO THE HIGH PRIEST DOTH BEAR ME WITNESS, AND ALL THE ESTATE OF THE ELDERS; FROM WHOM ALSO I RECEIVED LETTERS UNTO THE BRETHREN, AND WENT TO DAMASCUS, TO BRING THEM WHICH WERE THERE BOUND UNTO JERUSALEM, FOR TO BE PUNISHED. AND IT CAME TO PASS, THAT, AS I MADE MY JOURNEY AND WAS COME NIGHT UNTO DAMASCUS ABOUT NOON, SUDDENLY THERE SHONE FROM HEAVEN A GREAT LIGHT ROUND ABOUT ME. AND I FELL UNTO THE GROUND, AND HEARD A VOICE SAYING UNTO ME, SAUL, SAUL, WHY PERSECUTEST THOU ME?
Paul said the High Priest and the whole council can prove that I am telling the truth. I received from them letters written to the Jewish brothers in Damacus, so I went there to arrest these people and bring them back in chains to Jerusalem to be punished. He said as he was traveling and coming near Damascus, about midday a bright light suddenly flashed from the sky around me. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?
As Paul is telling his experience I think that how many times do we do not listen to God when he wants to tell us something. Have you every went to do something and all at once something is telling you not to do that, that could be the Lord talking to you. And warning you not to do it.
