22b PAUL APPEALS TO HIS ROMAN CITIZENSHIP
ACTS 22:25....AND AS THEY BOUND HIM WITH THONGS, PAUL SAID UNTO THE CENTURION THAT STOOD BY, IS IT LAWFUL FOR YOU TO SCOURGE A MAN THAT IS A ROMAN, AND UNCONDEMNED?
When they had tied Paul up to be whipped, he said to the officer standing there, Is it lawful for you to whip a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been tried for any crime?
The captain thought Paul was an Egyptian who was a riot leader, and he wasn’t that man. Paul was a Hebrew and he was a Roman citizen.
ACTS 22:26-28...WHEN THE CENTURION HEARD THAT, HE WENT AND TOLD THE CHIEF CAPTAIN, SAYING, TAKE HEED WHAT THOU DOEST; FOR THIS MAN IS A ROMAN. THEN THE CHIEF CAPTAIN CAME, AND SAID UNTO HIM, TELL ME, ART THOU A ROMAN? HE SAID, YEA. AND THE CHIEF CAPTAIN ANSWERED, WITH A GREAT SUM OBTAINED I THIS FREEDOM. AND PAUL SAID, BUT I WAS FREE BORN.
When the officer heard this, he went to the commander and asked him, what are you doing? That man is a Roman citizen. So the commander went to Paul and asked him, tell me, are you a Roman citizen? Yes, answered Paul. Paul was also a citizen of Heaven and his king or ruler is the heavenly Father.
ACTS 22:29-30...THEN STRAIGHTWAY THEY DEPARTED FROM HIM WHICH SHOULD HAVE EXAMINED HIM; AND THE CHIEF CAPTAIN ALSO WAS AFRAID, AFTER HE KNEW THAT HE WAS A ROMAN, AND BECAUSE HE HAD BOUND HIM. ON THE MORROW, BECAUSE HE WOULD HAVE KNOWN THE CERTAINTY WHEREFORE HE WAS ACCUSED OF THE JEWS, HE LOOSED HIM FROM HIS BANDS, AND COMMANDED THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND ALL THEIR COUNCIL TO APPEAR, AND BROUGHT PAUL DOWN AND SET HIM BEFORE THEM.
The men who were going to question Paul drew back form him; and the commander was afraid when he realized that Paul was a Roman citizen, and that he had put him in chains. The commander wanted to find out for sure what the Jews were accusing Paul of; so the next day he had the chains taken off and ordered the chief priests and the whole council to meet. Then he took Paul, and made him stand before the council.
The commander found out that Paul was not a common crook. That he was a Jew, and also a Roman citizen. The commander wanted to find out what the charges are. So he sent him before the chief priests and all their council. Paul was suited to be a missionary to Roman because he was a Roman citizen, understood the Mosaic system, and he was able to interpret it also.
