PAUL SENT TO CAESAREA
ACTS 23:23-24...AND HE CALLED UNTO HIM TWO CENTURIONS, SAYING, MAKE READY TWO HUNDRED SOLDIERS TO GO TO CAESAREA, AND HORSEMEN THREESCORE AND TEN, AND SPEARMEN TWO HUNDRED, AT THE THIRD HOUR OF THE NIGHT. AND PROVIDE THEM BEASTS, THAT THEY MAY SET PAUL ON, AND BRING HIM SAFE UNTO FELIX THE GOVERNOR.
The commander called two of his officers and said. Get two hundred soldiers ready to go to Caesarea, together with seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen, and be ready to leave by nine o’clock tonight. Provide some horses for Paul to ride, and get him safely through to Governor Felix. That was a large army just for one man’s protection. I believe that Paul was still in God’s will. He ask the commander for this kind of protection. Paul was send to Caesarea to appear before Felix. That was where the Roman governors had their headquarters. This will remove the danger for Paul. I believe God had control of all of this and that He moved on the commander to do this. He outwitted the devil.
ACTS 23:25-29...AND HE WROTE A LETTER AFTER THIS MANNER. CLAUDIUS LYSIAS UNTO THE MOST EXCELLENT GOVERNOR FELIX SENDETH GREETINGS. THIS MAN WAS TAKEN OF THE JEWS, AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED OF THEM; THEN CAME I WITH AN ARMY, AND RESCUED HIM, HAVING UNDERSTOOD THAT HE WAS A ROMAN. AND WHEN I WOULD HAVE KNOWN THE CAUSE WHEREFORE THEY ACCUSED HIM, I BROUGHT HIM FORTH INTO THEIR COUNCIL; WHOM I PERCEIVED TO BE ACCUSED OF QUESTIONS OF THEIR LAW, BUT TO HAVE NOTHING LAID TO HIS CHARGE WORTH OF DEATH OR OF BONDS.
The commander wrote a letter that went like this; “Claudius Lysias to his excellency, the governor Felix; greeting. The Jews seized this man and were about to kill him. I learned that he is a Roman citizen, so I went with my soldiers and rescued him, I wanted to know what they were accusing him of, so I took him down to their council. I found out that he had not done a thing for which he deserved to die or to be put in prison; the accusation against him had to do with questions about their own law. The commander wanted Felix to know that he is performing duty.
Under the Roman law Paul was not guilty of anything worth death.
ACTS 23:30-35...AND WHEN IT W AS TOLD ME HOW THAT THE JEWS LAID WAIT FOR THE MAN, I SENT STRAIGHTWAY TO THEE, AND GAVE COMMANDMENT TO HIS ACCUSERS ALSO TO SAY BEFORE THEE WHAT THEY HAD AGAINST HIM. FAREWELL...
THEN THE SOLDIERS, AS IT WAS COMMANDED THEM, TOOK PAUL, AND BROUGHT HIM BY NIGHT TO ANTIPATRIS. ON THE MORROW THEY LEFT THE HORSEMEN TO GO WITH HIM. AND RETURNED TO THE CASTLE; WHO, WHEN THEY CAME TO CAESAREA, AND DELIVERED THE EPISTLE TO THE GOVERNOR, PRESENTED PAUL ALSO BEFORE HIM. AND WHEN THE GOVERNOR HAD READ THE LETTER, HE ASKED OF WHAT PROVINCE HE WAS. AND WHEN HE UNDERSTOOD THAT HE WAS OF CILICIA; I WILL HEAR THEE, SAID HE, WHEN THINE ACCUSERS ARE ALSO COME. AND HE COMMANDED HIM TO BE KEPT IN HEROD’S JUDGMENT HALL.
The commander said “that when he was informed that the Jews are making a plot against him, I decided to send him to you. I told his accusers to make their charges against him before you.”
The soldiers carried out their orders. They took Paul and brought him that night as far as Antipatris. The next day the foot soldiers returned to the fort and left the horsemen to go on with him. They took him to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor and turned Paul over to him. The governor read the letter and asked Paul what province he was from. When he found out that he was from Cilicia, he said, I will hear you when your accusers arrive. The he gave orders that Paul be kept under guard in Herod’s palace.
Paul’s accusers came down to Caesarea. He was not defending himself as much as he is witnessing for Christ. The Lord had said that he would witness before governors and rulers and kings. And Paul was being brought before them. This was God’s way method of getting the word out. So Paul was still in the will of God.
