PAUL BEFORE FELIX
Paul was brought to Caesarea secretly form Jerusalem to get away from the Jews who wanted to kill him. He was still a prisoner. While in Jerusalem the Lord came to Paul at night to encourage him. The Lord told Paul that he would witness about Him in Rome. There because the Lord did not tell him that things was going to be easy and the he would have many experiences and hardships before him. We will find out in this chapter that the high priest Ananias and the elders come down form Jerusalem to accuse Paul before Felix. Paul was accused of sedition, rebellion, and profaning the temple.
ACTS 24:1...AND AFTER FIVE DAYS ANANIAS THE HIGH PRIEST DESCENDED WITH THE ELDERS, AND WITH A CERTAIN ORATOR NAME TERTULLUS, WHO INFORMED THE GOVERNOR AGAINST PAUL.
After five days the High Priest Ananias went to Caesarea with some elders and a lawyer named Tertullus. They appeared before the Governor and made their charges against Paul. Tertullius brought the charges that was prepared against Paul. But Paul was still his trust in God.
ACTS 24:2-5...AND WHEN HE WAS CALLED FORTH, TERTULLUS BEGAN TO ACCUSE HIM, SAYING, SEEING THAT BY THEE WE ENJOY GREAT QUIETNESS, AND THE VERY WORTHY DEEDS ARE DONE UNTO THIS NATION BY THY PROVIDENCE. WE ACCEPT IT ALWAYS, AND IN ALL PLACES, MOST NOBLE FELIX, WITH ALL THANKFULNESS. NOTWITHSTANDING, THAT I BE NOT FURTHER TEDIOUS UNTO THEE, I PRAY THEE THAT THOU WOULDEST HEAR US OF THY CLEMENCY A FEW WORDS. FOR WE HAVE FOUND THIS MAN A PESTILENT FELLOW, AND A MOVER OF SEDITION AMONG ALL THE JEWS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, AND A RINGLEADER OF THE SECT OF THE NAZARENES.
Tertullus began to accuse Paul as follows; “Most excellent Felix.(he starts out with flattery and buttering up the governor). Your wise leadership had brought us a long period of peace, and many necessary reforms are being made for the good of our country. We welcome this everywhere at all times, and we are deeply grateful to you. I do not want to take up too much of your time, however, so I beg you to be kind and listen to our grief account. We found this man to be dangerous nuisance; he starts riots among the Jews all over the world, and is a leader of the party of the Nazarenes.”
ACTS 24:6-9...WHO ALSO HATH GONE ABOUT TO PROFANE THE TEMPLE; WHOM WE TOOK, AND WOULD HAVE JUDGED ACCORDING TO OUR LAW. BUT THE CHIEF CAPTAIN LYSIAS CAME UPON US, AND WITH GREAT VIOLENCE TOOK HIM AWAY OUT OF OUT HANDS. COMMANDING HIS ACCUSERS TO COME UNTO THEE; BY EXAMINING OF WHOM THYSELF MAYEST TAKE KNOWLEDGE OF ALL THESE THINGS, WHEREOF WE ACCUSE HIM. AND THE JEWS ALSO ASSENTED, SAYING THAT THESE THINGS WERE SO.
Tertullus continues his chargers “He also tried to defile the Temple, and we arrested him. We want to judge him according to our own law, but the commander Lysias came in and with great violence took him from us. Then Lysias gave orders that his accusers should come before you. If you question this man, you yourself will be able to learn from him all the things that we accusing him of.”
The Jews also joined in the accusation and said that all this was true. Which is the religious rulers that came down. He insinuate the way the commander handled the case was wrong and that they could have handle the case the way it should be. He flattered Felix, unjust charges against Paul, subtle insinuations against the commander. So the charges against Paul were of a rebellious act, and he brought impurity in to the temple. They did this because Paul was preaching Jesus Christ and not their law. They thought when they did away with Jesus all this would stop. God knew what He was doing when He called Paul as he was on his way to Damascus. Paul was one of the greatest preachers that ever was and carried the gospel of Jesus to many places.
