PAUL APPEARS BEFORE FESTUS
ACTS 25:1-4...NOW WHEN FESTUS WAS COME INTO THE PROVINCE, AFTER THREE DAYS HE ASCENDED FROM CAESAREA TO JERUSALEM. THEN THE HIGH PRIEST AND THE CHIEF OF THE JEWS INFORMED HIM AGAINST PAUL. AND BESOUGHT HIM. AND DESIRED FAVOUR AGAINST HIM, THAT HE WOULD SEND FOR HIM TO JERUSALEM, LAYING WAIT IN THE WAY TO KILL HIM. BUT FESTUS ANSWERED, THAT PAUL SHOULD BE KEPT AT CAESAREA, AND THE HE HIMSELF WOULD DEPART SHORTLY THITHER.
Three days after Festus arrived in the province, he went from Caesarea to Jerusalem. There the chief priests and the Jewish leaders brought their charges against Paul. They begged Festus to do them the favor of having Paul come to Jerusalem, because they had made a plot to kill him on the way. Festus answered; “Paul is being kept a prisoner in Caesarea, and I myself will be going back there soon.”
Paul had been kept in prison for two years unjustly. Festus followed Felix as new governor. So Paul will appear before him. Paul did not forget to testify before the high political figures of the Roman Empire. Each time he tells about what the Lord Jesus had done for him.
It seems that Festus understood the situation Paul was in. I believe Felix told Festus that he had brought him to Caesarea to protect him from being put to death by the Jews. So when Festus heard that the Jews want Paul in Jerusalem, he told them that he wanted him down there.
The enemies of Paul didn’t waste any time getting to the new governor to try to get a judgment against Paul. I believe that Festus was aware that the Jews wanted to ambush Paul on his way to Jerusalem.
ACTS 25:5-7..LET THEM THEREFORE, SAID HE, WHICH AMONG YOU ARE ABLE, GO DOWN WITH ME, AND ACCUSE THIS MAN, IF THERE BE ANY WICKEDNESS IN HIM. AND WHEN HE HAD TARRIED AMONG THEM MORE THAN TEN DAYS, HE WENT DOWN UNTO CAESAREA; AND THE NEXT DAY SITTING ON THE JUDGMENT SEAT COMMANDED PAUL TO BE BROUGHT. AND WHEN HE WAS COME, THE JEWS WHICH CAME DOWN FROM JERUSALEM STOOD ROUND ABOUT, AND LAID MANY AND GRIEVOUS COMPLAINTS AGAINST PAUL, WHICH THEY COULD NOT PROVE.
Festus told the leaders to go down to Caesarea with him and accuse Paul, if he had done anything wrong. Festus spent another eight or ten days with them, and then went to Caesarea. On the next day he sat down in the judgment court, and ordered Paul to be brought in. When Paul arrived, the Jews who had come from Jerusalem stood around him and started making many serious charges against him, which they were not able to prove.
ACTS 25:8-9...WHILE HE ANSWERED FOR HIMSELF, NEITHER AGAINST THE LAW OF THE JEWS, NEITHER AGAINST THE TEMPLE, NOT YET AGAINST CAESAR, HAVE I OFFENDED ANY THING AT ALL. BUT FESTUS, WILLING TO DO THE JEWS A PLEASURE, ANSWERED PAUL, AND SAID, WILT THO GO UP TO JERUSALEM, AND THERE BE JUDGED OF THESE THINGS BEFORE ME?
Paul defended himself by saying I have done nothing wrong against the law of the Jews, or the Temple, or the Roman Emperor. Festus wanted to gain favor with the Jews, so he asked Paul, would you want to go to Jerusalem and be tried on these charges before me there? I believe that Festus was another rascal.
ACTS 25:10...THEN SAID PAUL, I STAND AT CAESAR’S JUDGMENT SEAT, WHERE I OUGHT TO BE JUDGED; TO THE JEWS HAVE I DONE NOW WRONG, AS THOU VERY WILL KNOWEST.
Paul said that he was standing before the Emperor’s own judgment court, where he should be tried. Paul stated that he had done no wrong to the Jews, as Festus should know.
Festus was going to uses Paul for his own political ends? Festus was going to take Paul back to Jerusalem. Festus could have received bribes from the Jews. Paul saw that he should be tried before the Roman court. Paul was a Roman citizen and he exercised his rights as a citizen, which was the normal and the right thing for him to do. Going back to Jerusalem would have made him a martyr. Paul went to Roman by the will of God.
ACTS 25:11...FOR IF I BE AN OFFENDER, OR HAVE COMMITTED ANY THINGS WORTHY OF DEATH, I REFUSE NOT TO DIE; BUT IF THERE BE NONE OF THESE THINGS WHEREOF THESE ACCUSE ME, NO MAN MAY DELIVER ME UNTO THEM. I APPEAL UNTO CAESAR.
Paul was saying that if he had broken the law and done something for which he deserve the death penalty, he ask not to escape it. But if there is no truth in the charges they bring against me, no one can hand me over to them. I appeal to the Emperor. Rome was noted for its justice, and Paul respected the authority. Because he was not getting justice so he made the appeal to Roman for he was a Roman citizen. He was using his legal rights.
ACTS 25:12...THEN FESTUS, WHEN HE HAD CONFERRED WITH THE COUNCIL, ANSWERED, HAST THOU APPEALED UNTO CAESAR? UNTO CAESAR SHALT THOU GO.
After Festus conferred with his advisers, answered, you have appealed to the emperor, so to the Emperor you will go..
