KING AGRIPPA AND BERNICE COME TO VISIT FESTUS
ACTS 25:13...AND AFTER CERTAIN DAYS KIND AGRIPPA AND BERNICE CAME UNTO CAESAREA TO SALUTE FESTUS.
Agrippa and Bernice came to Caesarea to pay a visit of welcome to Festus. Festus had just come into office as the new governor; so the king comes over for a visit. I notices that these politicians work together.
ACTS 25:14-15...AND WHEN THEY HAD BEEN THERE MANY DAYS, FESTUS DECLARED PAUL’S CAUSE UNTO THE KING, SAYING, THERE IS A CERTAIN MAN LEFT IN BONDS BY FELIX; ABOUT WHOM, WHEN I WAS AT JERUSALEM, THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND THE ELDERS OF THE JEWS INFORMED ME, DESIRING TO HAVE JUDGMENT AGAINST HIM.
After Agrippa and Bernice had been there several days, Festus explained Paul’s situation to the king; he said there is a man here who was left a prisoner by Felix. And he said that when he went to Jerusalem, the Jewish chief priests and elders brought charges against him an asked me to condemn him. He wanted the king to hear Paul.
ACTS 25:16......TO WHOM I ANSWERED, IT IS NOT ThE MANNER OF THE ROMANS DELIVER ANY MAN TO DIE, BEFORE THAT HE WHICH IS ACCUSED HAVE THE ACCUSED FACE TO FACE, AND HAVE LICENCE TO ANSWER FOR HIMSELF CONCERNING THE CRIME LAID AGAINST HIM.
Festus said he told them that the Romans are not in the habit of handing over any man accused of a crime before he has met his accusers face to face, and has the chance of defending himself against the accusation.
ACTS 25:17-19...THEREFORE, WHEN THEY WERE COME HITHER, WITHOUT ANY DELAY ON THE MORROW I SAT ON THE JUDGMENT SEAT, AND COMMANDED THE MAN TO BE BROUGHT FORTH; AGAINST WHO WHEN THE ACCUSER STOOD UP, THEY BROUGHT NONE ACCUSATION OF SUCH THINGS AS I SUPPOSED; BUT HAD CERTAIN QUESTIONS AGAINST HIM OF THEIR OWN SUPERSTITION, AND OF ONE JESUS, WHICH WAS DEAD, WHOM PAUL AFFIRMED TO BE ALIVE.
When they all came here, he said I lost no time, but on the very next day I sat in the judgment court and ordered the man to be brought in. And Paul’s accusers stood up, but they did not accuse him of any of the evil crimes that I thought they would. All they had were some arguments with him about their own religion and about a certain dead man named Jesus who, Paul claims, is alive. Paul had witnessed to the resurrection of Jesus Christ so that Festus knew about it.
ACTS 25:20-22...AND BECAUSE I DOUBTED OF SUCH MANNER OF QUESTIONS, I ASKED HIM WHETHER HE WOULD GO TO JERUSALEM, AND THERE BE JUDGED OF THESE MATTERS. BUT WHEN PAUL HAD APPEALED TO BE RESERVED UNTO THE HEARING OF AUGUSTUS, I COMMANDED HIM TO BE KEPT TILL I MIGHT SEND HIM TO CAESAR. THEN AGRIPPA SAID UNTO FESTUS, I WOULD ALSO HEAR THE MAN MYSELF. TOMORROW, SAID HE, THOU SHALT HEAR HIM.
Festus was undecided about how he could get information on these matters, so he asked Paul if he would be willing to go to Jerusalem and be tried there on these charges. But Paul appealed; he asked to be kept under guard and let the Emperor decide his case. So Festus gave orders for him to be kept under guard until he could send him to the Emperor. Agrippa said to Festus, that he himself would like to hear this man. And Festus told him that he would hear him tomorrow.
I believe that Festus was in a sort of hot seat here. Paul had committed no crime. Festus wanted Agrippa to help him out. I believe that Agrippa had heard about Paul and wanted to hear him for I believe he wanted to know more about the charges and he wanted to hear what Paul would have to say. So the meeting was arranged.[/center]
