THE STORM AT SEA
ACTS 27:13...AND WHEN THE SOUTH WIND BLEW SOFTLY, SUPPOSING THAT THEY HAD OBTAINED THEIR PURPOSE, LOSING THENCE, THEY SAILED CLOSE BY CRETE.
There was a soft wind from the south began to blow, and the men thought that they would carry out their plan; so they pulled up the anchor and sailed as close as possible along the coast of Crete.
The captain was a man that looked to self and to the wisdom of men. But Paul looked to God. Paul did not say that he believed in God, but I believe God. Our life are little boats. We can sail our boats by human feeling if we choose. But there is a storm blowing out there in this world. Yet everywhere we see failure. We need men of God to help us alone the way.
ACTS 27:14..BUT NOT LONG AFTER THERE AROSE AGAINST IT A TEMPESTUOUS WIND, CALLED EUROCLYDON.
But soon a very strong wind–the one called Northeaster–blew down from the island. This was wintertime and the stormy season that they were facing. It is this storm that Paul and all of them that was on the ship were caught in. When Paul was in Ephesus, he express a great desire to go to Rome.
ACTS 19:21..AFTER THESE THINGS WERE ENDED, PAUL PURPOSED IN THE SPIRIT, WHEN HE HAD PASSED THROUGH MACEDONIA AND ACHAIA, TO GO TO JERUSALEM, SAYING, AFTER I HAVE BEEN THERE, I MUST ALSO SEE ROME.
It seem that Paul would never see Rome at all because of darkness, despair, and defeat. But God appear to him..AND THE NIGHT FOLLOWING THE LORD STOOD BY HIM, AND SAID, BE OF GOOD CHEER, PAUL; FOR AS THOU HAST TESTIFIED OF ME IN JERUSALEM, SO MUST THOU BEAR WITNESS ALSO AT ROME. ACTS 23:11.
The Lord had assured Paul that he would go to Rome. If God promises you some- thing you can count on it.
ACTS 27:15-18...AND WHEN THE SHIP WAS CAUGHT, AND COULD NOT BEAR UP INTO THE WIND, WE LET HER DRIVE. AND RUNNING UNDER A CERTAIN ISLAND WHICH IS CALLED CLAUDA, WE HAD MUCH WORK TO COME BY THE BOAT; WHICH WHEN THEY HAD TAKEN UP, THEY USED HELPS, UNDERGIRDING THE SHIP AND FEARING LEST THEY SHOULD FALL INTO THE QUICKSANDS, STRAKE SAIL, AND SO WERE DRIVEN. AND WE BEING EXCEEDINGLY TOSSED WITH A TEMPEST, THE NEXT DAY THEY LIGHTENED THE SHIP.
The storm hit the ship, and since it was impossible to keep the ship headed into the wind, they headed into the wind, they gave up trying and let it be carried along by the wind. They got some shelter when they passed to the south of the little island of Cauda. There, with some difficulty, they managed to make the ship’s secure. They fastened some ropes tight around the ship. They were afraid that they might run into the sandbanks off the coast of Libya; so they lowered the sail and let the ship be carried by the wind. The violent storm continued, so on the next day they began to throw the ship’s cargo overboard. They were in the Mediterranean sea in this storm. They had to let the wind take control of the ship. They began to throw the cargo overboard to lighten the ship.
ACTS 27:19...AND ON THE THIRD DAY WE CAST OUT WITH OUR OWN HANDS THE TACKLING OF THE SHIP.
On the following day they threw the ship’s equipment overboard with their own hands. They through everything that they could get a loose over board.
ACTS 27:20...AND WHEN NEITHER SUN NOT STARS IN MANY DAYS APPEARED, AND NO SMALL TEMPEST LAY ON US, ALL HOPE THAT WE SHOULD BE SAVED WAS THEN TAKEN AWAY.
For many days they could not see the sun or the stars, and the wind kept on blowing very hard. They finally gave up all hope of being saved. This was a terrible storm. It was in the storm that the voice of the Lord was heard through Paul. The Lord had appeared to Paul and assured him that they would go to Rome.
