SHIP WRECKED
ACTS 27:21-26...BUT AFTER LONG ABSTINENCE PAUL STOOD FORTH IN THE MIDST OF THEM, AND SAID, SIRS, YE SHOULD HAVE HEARKENED UNTO ME, AND NOT HAVE LOOSED FROM CRETE, AND TO HAVE GAINED THIS HARM AND LOSS. AND NOW I EXHORT YOU TO BE OF GOOD CHEER; FOR THERE SHALL BE NO LOSS OF ANY MAN’S LIFE AMONG YOU, BUT OF THE SHIP FOR THERE STOOD BY ME THIS NIGHT THE ANGEL OF GOD, WHOSE I AM, AND WHOM I SERVE. SAYING, FEAR NOT, PAUL; THOU MUST BE BROUGHT BEFORE CAESAR; AND, LO, GOD HATH GIVEN THEE ALL THEM THAT SAIL WITH THEE. WHEREFORE, SIRS, BE OF GOOD CHEER; FOR I BELIEVE GOD, THAT IT SHALL EVEN AS IT WAS TOLD ME. HOW BE IT WE MUST BE CAST UPON A CERTAIN ISLAND.
After the men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood before them and said; “Men, you should have listened to me and not have sailed from Crete; then we would have avoided all this damage and loss. But now I beg you, take courage. Not one of you will lose his life; only the ship will be lost. For last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I worship came to me and said, Don’t be afraid, Paul. You must stand before the Emperor; and God, in his goodness, has given you the lives of all those who are sailing with you. And so, men, take courage for I trust in God that it will be just as I was told. But we will be driven ashore on some island.”
You see this was a very encouraging word to all those who were on board the ship. I like the words that Paul used, WHOSE I AM, AND WHOM I SERVE.
He believed in God for what He said; BE OF GOOD CHEER; FOR I BELIEVE GOD, THAT IT SHALL BE EVEN AS IT WAS TOLD ME.
ACTS 27:27....BUT WHEN THE FOURTEENTH NIGHT WAS COME, AS WE WERE DRIVEN UP AND DOWN IN ADRIA, ABOUT MIDNIGHT THE SHIP MEN DEEMED THAT THEY DREW NEAR TO SOME COUNTRY.
It was the fourteenth night, and they were being driven by the storm on the Mediterranean. About midnight the sailors suspected that they were getting close to land.
ACTS 27:28-29...AND SOUNDED, AND FOUND IT TWENTY FATHOMS; AND WHEN THEY HAD GONE A LITTLE FURTHER, THEY SOUNDED AGAIN, AND FOUND IT FIFTEEN FATHOMS. THEN FEARING LEST WE SHOULD HAVE FALLEN UPON ROCKS, THE CAST FOUR ANCHORS OUT OF THE STERN, AND WISHED FOR THE DAY.
They dropped a line with a weight tied to it and found that the water was one hundred and twenty feet deep; a little later they did the same and found that it was ninety feet deep. They were afraid that their ship would go on the rocks, so they lowered four anchors from the back of the ship and prayed for daylight. By them doing this meant that they were moving closer to land.
ACTS 27:30-31..AND AS THE SHIPMEN WERE ABOUT TO FLEE OUT OF THE SHIP, WHEN THEY HAD LET DOWN THE BOAT INTO THE SEA, UNDER COLOUR AS THOUGH THEY WOULD HAVE CAST ANCHORS OUT OF THE FORESHIP; PAUL SAID TO THE CENTURION AND TO THE SOLDIERS, EXCEPT THESE ABIDE IN THE SHIP, YE CANNOT BE SAVED.
The sailors tried to escape from the ship. They lowered the boat into the water and pretended that they were going to put out some anchors from the front of the ship.
The crew was trying to abandon ship. They were doing something that they should not have done.
But Paul said to the army officer and soldiers, if these sailors don’t stay on board, they cannot be saved. He was telling them that the only assurance of safety is for all to remain with the ship. Paul was putting his trust in the Lord. It is great to trust in the word of God. The angel of God had told Paul that he and the men would be saved, and Paul believed it. That was the only way for them to be saved. It was a question in believing in God.
ACTS 27:32...THEN THE SOLDIERS CUT OFF THE ROPES OF THE BOAT, AND LET HER FALL OFF.
So the soldiers cut the ropes that held the boat and let it drop into the water. The centurion is beginning to listen to Paul now. Paul gave the command and the soldiers cut the ropes to the life boat.
