PAUL IN ROME
ACTS 28:16...AND WHEN WE CAME TO ROME, THE CENTURION DELIVERED THE PRISONERS TO THE CAPTAIN OF THE GUARD; BUT PAUL WAS SUFFERED TO DWELL BY HIMSELF WITH A SOLDIER THAT KEPT HIM.
When they arrived in Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself with a soldier guarding him. He apparently had the freedom to live in a house, but he was always guarded. God was still looking out for him where ever he had to go he knew God would be with him, even in Rome. God had told him many times that what ever he had to go through, He would be with him.
ACTS 28:17-20...AND IT CAME TO PASS, THAT AFTER THREE DAYS PAUL CALLED THE CHIEF OF THE JEWS TOGETHER; AND WHEN THEY WERE COME TOGETHER, HE SAID UNTO THEM, MEN AND BRETHREN, THOUGH I HAVE COMMITTED NOTHING AGAINST THE PEOPLE, OR CUSTOMS OF OUR FATHERS, YET WAS I DELIVERED PRISONER FROM JERUSALEM INTO THE HANDS OF THE ROMANS. WHO, WHEN THEY HAD EXAMINED ME, WOULD HAVE LET ME GO, BECAUSE THERE WAS NO CAUSE OF DEATH IN ME, BUT WHEN THE JEWS SPAKE AGAINST IT, I WAS CONSTRAINED TO APPEAL UNTO CAESAR; NOT THAT I HAD AUGHT TO ACCUSE MY NATION OF. FOR THIS CAUSE THEREFORE HAVE I CALLED FOR YOU, TO SEE YOU, AND TO SPEAK WITH YOU; BECAUSE THAT FOR THE HOPE OF ISRAEL I AM BOUND WITH THIS CHAIN.
After three days Paul called the local Jewish leaders to a meeting. When they gathered, Paul said to them; my brothers. Even though I did nothing against our people or the customs that we receive from our ancestors, I was made a prisoner in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans, they questioned me and wanted to release me, because they found that I had done nothing for which I deserved to die. But when the Jews opposed this, I was forced to appeal to the Emperor, even though I had no accusation to make against my own people. That is why I asked to see you and talk with you; because I have this chain on me for the sake of him for whom the people of Israel hope.
Paul exclaim to the Jews why he was brought to Rome. In the first place he was brought because he was fulfilling what God had promised him. Second was because his own people turned against him like they turned against Jesus Christ and hanged Him on the cross to die for all people. We must stand firm for God and against the devil. The devil would like to get us to turn back on God.
ACTS 28:21-24...AND THEY SAID UNTO HIM, WE NEITHER RECEIVED LETTERS OUT OF JUDAEA CONCERNING THEE, NEITHER ANY OF THE BRETHREN THAT CAME SHEWED OR SPAKE ANY HARM OF THEE. BUT WE DESIRE TO HEAR OF THEE WHAT THOU THINKEST; FOR AS CONCERNING THIS SECT, WE KNOW THAT EVERY WHERE IT IS SPOKEN AGAINST. AND WHEN THEY HAD APPOINTED HIM A DAY THERE CAME MANY TO HIM INTO HIS LODGING; TO WHOM HE EXPOUNDED AND TESTIFIED THE KINGDOM OF GOD, PERSUADING THEM CONCERNING JESUS, BOTH OUT OF THE LAW OF MOSES, AND OUT OF THE PROPHETS, FROM MORNING TILL EVENING. AND SOME BELIEVED THE THINGS WHICH WERE SPOKEN, AND SOME BELIEVED NOT.
The Jews said to him; “We have not received any letters from Judea about you, nor have any of our brothers come from there with any news, or to say anything bad about you. But we would like to hear your ideas, for we do know that every where people speak against this party that you belong to.” So they set a date with Paul, and a larger number of them came that day to where Paul was staying. From morning till night he explained and gave them his message about the kingdom of God. He tried to convince them about Jesus by quoting from the law of Moses and the writings of the prophets. Some of them were convinced by his words, but others would not believe.
We see here what kind of liberty that Paul had as a prisoner. There was a soldier on guard to watch him. We see that Paul use back life to the Old Testament to persuade the Jews concerning Jesus.
ACTS 28:25-31....AND WHEN THEY AGREED NOT AMONG THEMSELVES, THEY DEPARTED, AFTER THAT PAUL HAD SO SPOKEN ONE WORD, WELL SPAKE THE HOLY GHOST BY ESAIAS THE PROPHET UNTO OUR FATHERS. SAYING, GO UNTO THIS PEOPLE, AND SAY, HEARING YE SHALL HEAR, AND SHALL NOT UNDERSTAND; AND SEEING YE SHALL SEE, AND NOT PERCEIVE. FOR THE HEART OF THIS PEOPLE IS WAXED GROSS, AND THEIR EARS ARE DULL OF HEARING, AND THEIR EYES HAVE THEY CLOSED; LEST THEY SHOULD SEE WITH THEIR EYES, AND HEAR WITH THEIR EARS, AND UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEART, AND SHOULD BE CONVERTED, AND I SHOULD HEAL THEM. BE IT KNOWN THEREFORE UNTO YOU, THAT THE SALVATION OF GOD IS SENT UNTO THE GENTILES, AND THAT THEY WILL HEAR IT. AND WHEN HE HAD SAID THESE WORDS, THE JEWS DEPARTED, AND HAD GREAT REASONING AMONG THEMSELVES. AND PAUL DWELT TWO WHILE YEARS IN HIS OWN HIRED HOUSE, AND RECEIVED ALL THAT CAME IN UNTO HIM. PREACHING THE KINGDOM OF GOD, AND TEACHING THOSE THINGS WHICH CONCERN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, WITH ALL CONFIDENCE, NO MAN FORBIDDING HIM.
The Jews left, disagreeing among themselves, after Paul had said this one thing; “How well the Holy Ghost spoke through the prophet Isaiah to their ancestors. For he said; ‘go and say to this people; you will listen and listen, but not understand; you will look and look, but not see. Because this people’s mind is dull; they have stopped up their ears, and they have closed their eyes, otherwise, their eyes might see, their ears might hear, their minds might understand, and they might turn to me, says God. And I would heal them.’ ”
And Paul added; “You are to know, then, that God’s message of salvation has been sent to the Gentiles. They will listen.” After Paul said this, the Jews left, arguing strongly among themselves. For two years Paul lived there in a place he rented for himself, and welcomed all who came to see him. He preached about the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ, speaking with all boldness and freedom.
The Book of Acts tells about the gospel being carried to all parts of the earth. In the garden of Eden man doubted and that led to disobedience. In the day of Paul some believed the gospel and some did not. That is the way it is today. What a great need for the preaching the gospel just like it is. The Holy Ghost is working today. The work of the church has not been completed; it is a continuing story to a lost dying world. Let us rededicate our life to the work of God regardless of what the world does against us. I believe the time of the rapture is at hand.
