LUKE 20:19-26
THE QUESTION ABOUT PAYING TAXES
They did not like to pay taxes to the Roman. They thought that the question on taxes would result in a answer which could bring Jesus into trouble, either the Romans or the people.
VERSES 19-20....AND THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND THE SCRIBES THE SAME HOUR SOUGHT TO LAY HANDS ON HIM; AND THEY FEARED THE PEOPLE: FOR THEY PERCEIVED THAT HE HAD SPOKE THIS PARABLE AGAINST THEM. AND THEY WATCHED HIM, AND SENT FORTH SPIES, WHICH SHOULD BEING THEMSELVES JUST MEN, THAT THEY MIGHT TAKE HOLD OF HIS WORDS, THAT SO THEY MIGHT DELIVER HIM UNTO THE POWER AND AUTHORITY OF THE GOVERNOR.
The teachers of the law and the chief priests tried to arrest Jesus on the spot, because they knew that he had told this parable against them; but they were afraid of the people. So they watched for the right time. They bribed some men to pretend they were sincere, and sent them to trap Jesus with questions, so they could hand him over to the authority and power of the Governor.
They tried to arrest Jesus, but because of fear of the what the people would do they did not go any farther with it. They change over to sending spies in to collect things that they could use. They thought that by doing this that He would say the wrong thing and they would hand him over to the authority, and they would not be blamed for it. You have to watch the devil.
VERSES 21-22....AND THEY ASKED HIM, SAYING, MASTER, WE KNOW THAT THOU SAYEST AND TEACHEST RIGHTLY, NEITHER ACCEPTEST THOU THE PERSON OF ANY, BUT TEACHEST THE WAY OF GOD TRULY. IS IT LAWFUL FOR US TO GIVE TRIBUTE UNTO CAESAR, OR NO?
These spies said to Jesus, teacher, we know that what you say and teach is right. We know that you pay no attention to what a man seems to be, but teach the truth about God’s will for man, tell us, is it against our law for us to pay taxes to the Roman Emperor. Or not?
I believe the spies were trying to flatter Him, put him off guard. Then they ask Him about the taxes, if it was unlawful to pay taxes to the Romans. They thought that Jesus would be in trouble in any way he answered.
VERSES 23-25...BUT HE PERCEIVED THEIR CRAFTINESS, AND SAID UNTO THEM, WHY TEMPT YE ME? SHEW ME A PENNY. WHOSE IMAGE AND SUPERSCRIPTION HATH IT? THEY ANSWERED AND SAID, CAESAR’S. AND HE SAID UNTO THEM. RENDER THEREFORE UNTO CAESAR THE THINGS WHICH BE CAESAR’S AND UNTO GOD THE THINGS WHICH BE GOD’S.
But Jesus saw through their trick an said to them. Show me a silver coin. Whose face and name are these on it? The Emperor’s, they said, so Jesus said, well, then, pay to the Emperor what belongs to him, and pay to God what belongs to God. I believe that this means to obey the commands of the king and obey the command-ments of God. This reply confounded these critics. This answer did not show disloyalty to Caesar, or to God. Jesus was saying that we are citizens of heaven and earth at the same time. The Christians loyalty to God first.
VERSE 26...AND THEY COULD NOT TAKE HOLD OF HIS WORDS BEFORE THE PEOPLE; AND THEY MARVELED AT HIS ANSWER, AND HELD THEIR PEACE.
They could not catch him in a thing there before the people, so they kept quiet, amazed at his answer. They had been unable to trap Him. So they were astonished and were in silence.
