LUKE 20:27-40
THE QUESTION ABOUT RISING FROM DEATH.
VERSES 27-28....THEN CAME TO HIM CERTAIN OF THE SADDUCEES, WHICH DENY THAT THERE IS ANY RESURRECTION; AND THEY ASKED HIM. SAYING, MASTER, MOSES WROTE UNTO US, IF ANY MAN’S BROTHER DIE, HAVING A WIFE, AND HE DIE WITHOUT CHILDREN, THAT HIS BROTHER SHOULD TAKE HIS WIFE, AND RAISE UP SEED UNTO HIS BROTHER.
Some Sadducees came to Jesus, (They are the ones who say that people will not rise from death.). They asked him; Teacher, Moses wrote this law for us; If a man dies and leaves a wife, but no children, that man’s brother must marry the widow so they can have children for the dead man. They were a high priestly party, worldly- minded and very ready to cooperate with the Romans. These Sadducees denied the doctrine of the afterlife and of rewards and punishments beyond the grave.
They want to ridicule the idea of the resurrection by referring to the marriage about the brother to the wife that their brother left behind. When a man died and left a wife without children; his brother was to marry her and raise up children to his brother.
VERSES 29-33...THERE WERE THEREFORE SEVEN BRETHREN; AND THE FIRST TOOK A WIFE, AND DIED WITHOUT CHILDREN, AND THE SECOND TOOK HER TO WIFE, AND HE DIES CHILDLESS. AND THE THIRD TOOK HER; AND IN LIKE MANNER THE SEVEN ALSO; AND THEY LEFT NO CHILDREN, AND DIED. LAST OF ALL THE WOMAN DIED ALSO. THEREFORE IN THE RESURRECTION WHOSE WIFE OF THEN IS SHE? FOR SEVEN HAD HER TO WIFE.
Once there were seven brothers; the oldest got married, and died without having children, then the second one married the woman, and then the third; the same thing happened to all seven—they died without having children. Last of all, the woman died. Now, on the day when the dead are raised to life, whose wife will she be? All seven of then had married her?
VERSES 34-36...AND JESUS ANSWERING SAID UNTO THEM, THE CHILDREN OF THIS WORLD MARRY, AND ARE GIVEN IN MARRIAGE; BUT THEY WHICH SHALL BE ACCOUNTED WORTHY TO OBTAIN THAT WORLD, AND THE RESURRECTION FROM THE DEAD, NEITHER MARRY, NOR ARE GIVEN IN MARRIAGE. NEITHER CAN THEY DIE ANY MORE; FOR THEY ARE EQUAL UNTO THE ANGELS; AND ARE THE CHILDREN OF GOD, BEING THE CHILDREN OF THE RESURRECTION.
Jesus answered them; The man and women of this age marry, but the men and women who are worthy to be raised from death and live in the age to come do not marry. They are like angels and cannot die. The are the sons of God, because they have been raise from death. These Scriptures points to a condition of this life which are in contrast to conditions of the life to come. The life to come is a lot different from the life to come. Here Jesus is speaking of the Christian, not all of the departed
Jesus speaks here of three things. One is marriage does not apply to them that goes to heaven. Next, they cannot die any more. Then next they are equal to angels and are sons of God.
There is a sense in which that Christians are the sons of God. They have been born again. They have been adopted into the family of God. Therefore we are the sons of God. We are in the fullness of the lie in the family of God.
VERSES 37-38....NOW THAT THE DEAD ARE RAISED, EVEN MOSES SHEWED AT THE BUSH, WHEN HE CALLETH THE LORD THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB. FOR HE IS NOT A GOD OF THE DEAD, BUT OF THE LIVING; FOR ALL LIVE UNTO HIM.
And Moses clearly proves that the dead will be raised to life. In the passage about the burning bush he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. This means that he is the God of the living, not of the dead – for all are alive to him. Here where the Scripture says, FOR GOD IS NOT GOD OF THE DEAD, BT OF HE LIVING can be true only if they are alive beyond the grave. Death may stop our physical body here, but we as Christians will be in our spiritual body in heaven. We will have eternal life with our heavenly father.
VERSES 39-40....THEN CERTAIN OF THE SCRIBES ANSWERING SAID, MASTER, THOU HAST WELL SAID. AND AFTER THAT THEY DURST NOT ASK HIM ANY QUESTION AT ALL.
Some of the teachers of the law spoke up, a good answer, teacher. For they did not dare ask Jesus any more questions.
