LUKE 20:41-47
THE QUESTION ABOUT THE MESSIAH
VERSES 41-44...AND HE SAID UNTO THEM, HOW SAY THEY THAT CHRIST IS DAVID’S SON? AND DAVID HIMSELF SAITH IN THE BOOK OF PSALMS, THE LORD SAID UNTO MY LORD, SIT THOU ON MY RIGHT HAND, TILL I MAKE THINE ENEMIES THY FOOT STOOL. DAVID THERE- FORE CALLETH HIM LORD, HOW IS HE THEN HIS SON?
Jesus said to them; How can it be said that the Messiah will be the descendant of David? Because David himself says in the book of Psalms; “The Lord said to my Lord; sit here at my right side, until I put your enemies as a footstool under your feet. David, then, called him Lord. How can the Messiah be David’s descendant ?
Luke does not mean that Jesus is denying his Davidic descent. We know that Jesus pre-existed. We know that Jesus is greater than David. The question arose, and Jesus explained it that the saying of the son of David was not saying that he was the son of David but that he is the Lord of people’s heart and lives.
JESUS WARNS AGAINST THE TEACHERS OF THE LAW.
VERSES 45-47....THEN IN THE AUDIENCE OF ALL THE PEOPLE HE SAID UNTO HIS DISCIPLES. BEWARE OF THE SCRIBES, WHICH DESIRE TO WALK IN LONG ROBES, AND LOVE GREETINGS IN THE MARKETS, AND THE HIGHEST SEATS IN THE SYNAGOGUES, AND THE CHIEF ROOMS AT FEASTS; WHICH DEVOUT WIDOWS HOUSES, AND FOR A SHEW MAKE LONG PRAYERS; THE SAME SHALL RECEIVE GREATER DAMNATION.
As the crowd listened to him, Jesus said to His disciples; Watch out for the teachers of the law; who like to walk around in their long robes, and love to be greeted with respect in the marker place; who choose the reserved seats in the meeting houses and the best places at feasts; who take advantage of widows and rob them of their homes. They make a show of saying long prayers. Their punishment will be all the worse. They dress to shine before people, but did not shine before God. The scribes could not teach for money. But there were some of the people gave them gifts. Some of the scribes encouraged the widows to make gifts beyond what they were able to make. I believe the scribes long prayers express length rather than depth. They were dishonest to the people and to God. They were
hypocrisy.
