LUKE 22:24-30
THE ARGUMENT ABOUT GREATNESS.
VERSES 24-25....AND THERE WAS ALSO A STRIFE AMONG THEM, WHICH OF THEM SHOULD BE ACCOUNTED THE GREATEST. AND HE SAID UNTO THEM, THE KINGS OF THE GENTILES EXERCISE LORDSHIP OVER THEM; AND THE THAT EXERCISE AUTHORITY UPON THEM ARE CALLED BENEFACTORS.
An argument came up among the disciples as to which one of them should be thought of as the greatest. Jesus said to them; The kings of this world have power over their people, and the rulers are called friends of the people. The disciples were interested in who would get the top spot in the kingdom of heaven. But Jesus rebuked them. People of the world like to get credit for what they have done.
VERSES 26-27...BUT YOU SHALL NOT BE SO; BUT HE THAT IS GREATEST AMONG YOU, LET HIM BE AS THE YOUNGER; AND HE THAT IS CHIEF, AS HE THAT DOTH SERVE. FOR WHETHER IS GREATER, HE THAT SITTETH AT MEAT, OR HE THAT SERVETH? IS NOT HE THAT SITTETH AT MEAT? BUT I AM AMONG YOU AS HE THAT SERVETH.
But this is not the way it is with you; rather, the greatest one among you must be like the youngest, and the leader must be like the servant. Who is greater, the one who sits down to eat or the one who serves him? The one who sits down, of course. But I am among you as one who serves. Feet washing that John records was a sinking illustration of Jesus readiness to take the place of one who serves. Jesus is saying that faithful service in a lowly place is itself true greatness.
VERSES 28-30....YE ARE THEY WHICH HAVE CONTINUED WITH ME IN MY TEMPTATIONS. AND I APPOINT UNTO YOU A KINGDOM, AS MY FATHER HATH APPOINTED UNTO ME; THAT YE MAY EAT AND DRINK AT MY TABLE IN MY KINGDOM, AND SIT ON THRONES JUDGING THE TWELVE TRIBES OF ISRAEL.
Jesus said to them, you have stayed with me all through my trials; and just as my Father has given me the right to rule, so I will make the same agreement with you. You will eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones to judge the twelve tribes of Israel.
