LUKE 22:31-38
I. JESUS PREDICTS PETER’S DENIAL.
VERSES 31-34...AND THE LORD S SAID, SIMON, SIMON, BEHOLD, SATAN HATH DESIRED TO HAVE YOU, THAT HE MAY SIFT YOU AS WHEAT; BUT I HAVE PRAYED FOR THEE, THAT THY FAITH FAIL NOT; AND WHEN THOU A RT CONVERTED, STRENGTHEN THY BRETHREN. AND HE SAID UNTO HIM, LORD, I AM READY TO GO WITH THEE, BOTH INTO PRISON, AND TO DEATH. AND HE SAID, I TELL THEE, PETER, THE thingy SHALL NOT CROW THIS DAY, BEFORE THAT THOU SHALT THRICE DENY THAT THOU KNOWEST ME.
Jesus said, Simon, Simon, Satan has received permission to test all of you, as a farmer separates the wheat from the chaff, but I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith will not fail. And when you turn back to me, you must strength your brothers.
Peter answered, Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you and to die with you.
Jesus answered, I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have said three times that do not know me. God is supreme, the trials and testings that come to God’s people are only those that he allows. The difficulty and hardship is a part of the Christian way.
Peter realizes neither the seriousness of the position not his own weakness. Peter declares his readiness to die for Jesus if need be.
II. PURSE, BAG, AND SWORD.
VERSES 35-38...AND HE SAID UNTO THEM, WHEN I SENT YOU WITH OUT PURSE, AND SCRIP, AND SHOES, LACKED YE ANY THINGS? AND THEY SAID, NOTHING. THEN SAID HE UNTO THEM, BUT NOW. HE THAT HATH A PURSE, LET HIM TAKE IT, AND LIKEWISE HIS SCRIP; AND HE THAT HATH NO SWORD, O LET HIM SELL HIS GARMENT , AND BUY ONE. FOR I SAY UNTO YOU, THAT THIS THAT IS WRITTEN MUST YET BE ACCOMPLISHED IN ME, AND HE WAS RECKONED AMONG THE TRANSGRESSORS; FOR THE THING CONCERNING ME HAVE AN END. AND THEY SAID, LORD, BEHOLD, HERE ARE TWO SWORDS, AND HE SAID UNTO THEM, IT IS ENOUGH.
Jesus said to them, When I sent you out that time with out purse, bag, or shoes, did you lack anything? They told Jesus, not a thing. Jesus said, but now, whoever has a purse or a bag must take it; and whoever does not have a sword must sell his coat and buy one. For I tell you this; the scripture that says, He was included with the criminal, must come true about me. For that which was written about me is coming true. The disciples said, look here are two swords, Lord. Jesus said that is enough.
