LUKE 22:39-46 JESUS PRAYS
VERSE 39...AND HE CAME OUT, AND WENT, AS HE WAS WONT, TO THE MOUNT OF LIVES; AND HIS DISCIPLES ALSO FOLLOWED HIM.
Jesus left and went, as he usually did, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples went with Him. Jesus went to the Mount Oliver all the week to pray. It must have been a custom that He went up there at other time, before this week and He could have spend the night on the slopes if this mountain.
VERSE 40...AND WHEN HE WAS AT THE PLACE, HE SAID UNTO THEM, PRAY THAT YE ENTER NOT INTO TEMPTATION.
When Jesus came to the place he said to them, Pray that you will not fall into temptation. He instructed the disciples to pray that they would not fall into temptation to sin.
VERSES 41-42....AND HE WAS WITHDRAWN FROM THEM ABOUT A STONE’S CAST, AND KNEELED DOWN, AND PRAYED. SAYING, FATHER, IF THOU BE WILLING, REMOVE THIS CUP FROM ME; NEVERTHELESS NOT MY WILL, BUT THINE, BE DONE.
Jesus then went off from them, about the distance of a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed alone. Jesus started His pray saying, Father if you will, take this cup away from me, but not my will, however, but your will be done. Jesus had a human shrinking from the awful death that lay ahead of him. The cup here is the associations of suffering of the wrath of God. Jesus prayed that God’s will may be done, not His will.
VERSES 43-44...AND THERE APPEARED AND ANGEL UNTO HIM FROM HEAVEN, STRENGTHENING HIM. AND BEING IN AN AGONY HE PRAYED MORE EARNESTLY; AND HIS SWEAT WAS AS IT WERE GREAT DROPS OF BLOOD FALLING DOWN TO THE GROUND.
We see here that an angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. In great anguish Jesus prayed even more fervently; and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. We should get a intensity of his feeling when we read of sweat like great drops of blood falling down upon the ground.
VERSES 45-46...AND WHEN HE ROSE UP FROM PRAYER, AND WAS COME TO HIS DISCIPLES, HE FOUND THEM SLEEPING FOR SORROW. AND SAID UNTO THEM, WHY SLEEP YE? RISE AND PRAY, LEST YE ENTER INTO TEMPTATION.
Jesus rising from Prayer, he went back to the disciples and found them asleep, so great was their grief, and he said to them, why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that they will not fall into temptation. Jesus found the disciples asleep for they were warned out from their sorrow and worn out by grief. They were asleep instead of praying with Jesus. They must pray for the right attitude next time problems come.
