LUKE 22:47-53
THE ARREST OF JESUS. VERSE 47-53
VERSE 47-48....AND WHILE HE YET SPAKE, BEHOLD A MULTITUDE, AND THE HE THAT WAS CALLED JUDAS, ONE OF THE TWELVE, WENT BEFORE THEM, AND DREW NEAR INTO JESUS TO KISS HIM. BUT JESUS SAID UNTO HIM, JUDAS, BETRAYEST THOU THE SON OF MAN WITH A
KISS?
Jesus was still speaking when a crowd arrived; Judas, one of the twelve disciples, was leading the crowd, and he came up to Jesus to kiss Him. But Jesus said, is it with a kiss, Judas, that you betray the Son of Man. Luke brings out that Judas approached Jesus to kiss him, but he does not mention that he kissed him. The way I see it and that is that he did kiss Jesus. The kiss was not unusual form of greeting when men met. What Judas trying not to put the spot light on him. He did not want the rest of them to know that he was betraying Jesus.
VERSES 49-50...WHEN THEY WHICH WERE ABOUT HIM SAW WHAT WOULD FOLLOW, THEY SAID UNTO HIM, LORD, SHALL WE SMITE WITH THE SWORD? AND ONE OF THEM SMOTE THE SERVANT OF THE HIGH PRIEST, AND CUT OFF HIS RIGHT EAR.
When the disciples who were with Jesus saw what was going to happen, they said, shall we strike with our swords, Lord? Then one of them struck the High Priest’s slave and cut of his right ear. The disciples jump to the conclusion that they should use their sword. The disciple that used the sword was Peter found in John 18:10. Peter did not wait for a answer but used his sword.
VERSE 51....AND JESUS ANSWERED AND SAID, SUFFER YE THUS FAR, AND HE TOUCHED HIS EAT, AND HEALED HIM.
I believe that Jesus was saying: I forbade what you have done Peter, this is enough and touched the man’s ear and healed him. Jesus was saying, let them have their way. Believe also that Jesus made it clear that he wanted no fighting. After this he healed the man’s ear.
VERSE 52-53....THEN JESUS SAID UNTO THE CHIEF PRIESTS, AND CAPTAINS OF THE TEMPLE, AND THE ELDERS, WHICH WERE COME TO HIM. BE YE COME OUT, AS AGAINST A THIEF, WITH SWORDS AND STAVES? WHEN I WAS DAILY WITH YOU IN THE TEMPLE, YE STRETCHED FORTH NO HANDS AGAINST ME; BUT THIS IS YOUR HOUR, AND THE POWER OF DARKNESS.
Jesus said to the chief priests and the officers of the Temple guard and the elders who had come there to get him: Jesus said to them did you have to come with swords and clubs, as though I were a outlaw? Jesus said, I was with you in the temple every day, and you did not try to arrest me. But this hour belongs to you and to the power of darkness. There were leading men among the priests, representing the chief priest. They had weapons as if they were going to war against a whole army of robbers. Jesus said THIS IS YOUR HOUR, this could mean the hour of the cross.
