LUKE 22:63-71
JESUS MOCKED AND BEATEN AND BEFORE THE COUNCIL.
VERSE 63-65...AND THE MEN THAT HELD JESUS MOCKED HIM, AND SMOTE HIM. AND WHEN THEY HAD BLINDFOLDED HIM, THEY STRUCK HIM ON THE FACE, AND ASKED HIM, SAYING PROPHESY, WHO IS IT THAT SMOTE THEE? AND MANY OTHER THINGS BLASPHEMOUSLY SPAKE THEY AGAINST HIM.
The men that were guarding Jesus made fun of him an beat him at the expense of Jesus they did a little horse play. They blindfolded him an asked him, who hit Him? They gathered that he was a prophet. And they said many other insulting things to him.
VERSES 66-71...AND AS SOON AS IT WAS DAY, THE ELDERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND THE SCRIBES CAME TOGETHER, AND LED HIM INTO THEIR COUNCIL, SAYING, ART THOU THE CHRIST? TELL US. AND HE SAID UNTO THEM, IF I TELL YOU, YE WILL NOT BELIEVE. AND IF I ALSO ASK ;YOU, YE WILL NOT ANSWER ME, NOT LET ME GO. HEREAFTER SHALL THE SON OF MAN SIT ON THE RIGHT HAND OF HE POWER OF GOD. THEN SAID THEY ALL, ART THOU THEN THE SON OF GOD? AND HE SAID UNTO THEM, YE SAY THAT I AM. AND THEY SAID, WHAT NEED WE ANY FURTHER WITNESS? FOR WE OURSELVES HAVE HEARD OF HIS OWN MOUTH,
When day came, the elders of the Jews, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law met together, and Jesus was brought to their council. They said tell us, are you the Messiah? Jesus answered; If I tell you, you will not believe me, Jesus said if I ask you a question you will not answer me. But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right side of the almighty God. They all said, are you, then, the son of God? He answered them, you say that I am. And they said, we don’t need any witnesses. We ourselves have heard his very own words.
There were two stages. First there was a Jewish trial in which the chief priests had Jesus condemned according to Jewish law and tried to work out how best to get the Romans to execute him. Second they wanted the Roman leaders to try to get Pilate to sentence Jesus to death. They tried to get Jesus to incriminate himself by telling that he was the Messiah. In verse 70 they ask him a direct question, are you the Son of God, then? They wanted to know whether Jesus was the son of God. They wanted Him to say yes. They said that they did not need any more witnesses.
