LUKE 23:1-12
JESUS BEFORE PILATE- 1-5
VERSES 1-2...AND THE WHOLE MULTITUDE OF THEM AROSE, AND LED HIM UNTO PILATE. AND THEY BEGAN TO ACCUSE HIM, SAYING, WE FOUND THIS FELLOW PERVERTING THE NATION, AND FORBIDDING TO GIVE TRIBUTE TO CAESAR, SAYING THAT HE HIMSELF IS CHRIST A KING.
The whole group rose up and took Jesus before Pilate, where they began to accuse him; we caught this man misleading our people, telling them; not to pay taxes to the Emperor and claiming that he himself is Christ, a King. They accused him on three accounts; first, PERVERTING THE NATION. Second, FORBIDDING US TO GIVE TRIBUTE TO CAESAR. Third, SAYING THAT HE HIMSELF IS CHRIST A KING. The last two charges were serious and Pilate could be expected to take a dim look at anyone that is guilty of either one.
VERSE 3...AND PILATE ASKED HIM, SAYING . ART THOU THE KING OF THE JEWS? AND HE ANSWERED HIM AND SAID, THOU SAYEST IT.
Pilate asked Jesus, Are you the king of the Jews. Jesus answered him and said you say it. He was king of the Jews, and could not give a direct negative answer. He was not king in the sense Pilate meant.
VERSE 4....THEN SAID PILATE TO THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND TO THE PEOPLE, I FIND NO FAULT IN THIS MAN.
Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, I find no reason to condemn this man. It was a public statement, not a private communication to those who brought Jesus to him. Pilate discerned that this was a malice of the Jews and not any capital charge.
VERSE 5...AND THEY WERE THE MORE FIERCE, SAYING, HE STIRRETH UP THE PEOPLE, TEACHING THROUGHOUT ALL JEWRY, BEGINNING FROM GALILEE TO THIS PLACE.
They insisted even more strongly, that He is starting a riot among the people with his teaching. He began in Galilee, went through all of Judea, and now has come here. The chief priests and the crowd was not pleased with what he told them that he found no reason to condemn Jesus.
JESUS BEFORE HEROD V. 6-12
VERSE 6-7...WHEN PILATE HEARD OF GALILEE, HE ASKED WHETHER THE MAN WERE A GALILEAN. AND AS SOON AS HE KNEW THAT HE BELONGED UNTO HEROD’S JURISDICTION, HE SENT HIM TO HEROD WHO HIMSELF ALSO WAS AT JERUSALEM AT THAT TIME.
When Pilate heard that he was Galilean, he ask the people that accused Jesus if he was a Galilean. So when he heard that Jesus was from the region ruled by Herod, he sent Jesus to Herod who was also in Jerusalem at that time. Pilate did not want to have anything to do with the case.
VERSE 8....AND WHEN HEROD SAW JESUS, HE WAS EXCEEDING GLAD; FOR HE WAS DESIROUS TO SEE HIM OF A LONG SEASON, BECAUSE HE HAD HEARD MANY THINGS OF HIM; AND HE HOPED TO HAVE SEEN SOME MIRACLE DONE BY HIM.
Herod was pleased when he saw Jesus, for he had heard about him and had been wanting to see him for a long time; he was hoping to see Jesus perform some miracle. Jesus’s miracles that he performed penetrated into the palace and Herod wanted to see Him perform some. Herod was only thinking of the marvellous or enjoyment.
VERSE 9-10...THEN HE QUESTIONED WITH HIM IN MANY WORDS, BUT HE ANSWERED HIM NOTHING. AND THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND SCRIBES STOOD AND VEHEMENTLY ACCUSED HIM.
Herod asked Jesus many questions, but Jesus did not answer a word. The chief priests and the teachers of the law stepped forward and made strong accusations against Jesus. This must have been disappointing to Herod. From the many questions that he had ask Jesus he got no answer. The chief priests and the scribes made accusations against Jesus for they were afraid that Herod would release Jesus.
VERSE 11-12...AND HEROD WITH HIS MEN OF WAR SET HIM AT NOUGHT, AND MOCKED HIM, AND ARRAYED HIM IN A GORGEOUS ROBE, AND SENT HIM AGAIN TO PILATE. AND THE SAME DAY PILATE AND HEROD WERE MADE FRIENDS TOGETHER; FOR BEFORE THEY WERE AT ENMITY BETWEEN THEMSELVES.
Herod and his soldiers made fun of Jesus and treated him with contempt. They put a fine robe on him and sent him back to Pilate. And on that day Herod and Pilate became friends. They had been enemies before this.
Herod when he could not see any miracles he lost interest in the matter. He should have released Jesus because he saw Jesus’s innocence. He joined his men of war by mocking Jesus. He had no interest in the case and declined to try it. I believe that the mockery was made because Herod did not take the charges seriously.
