LUKE 23:13-25
JESUS SENTENCED TO DEATH.
Pilate was compelled to sentence Jesus to death now. Of course it was against his wishes because he knew the Jesus was innocent.
VERSES 13-14...AND PILATE, WHEN HE HAD CALLED TOGETHER THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND THE RULERS AND THE PEOPLE. SAID UNTO THEM, YE HAVE BROUGHT THIS MAN UNTO ME, AS ONE THAT PERVERTETH THE PEOPLE; AND BEHOLD, I, HAVING EXAMINED HIM BEFORE YOU, HAVE FOUND NO FAULT IN THIS MAN TOUCHING THOSE THINGS WHEREOF YE ACCUSE HIM;
Pilate called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people and said to them; You brought this Jesus to me and said that he was misleading the people. Pilate said, I have examined him in your presence. And I have not found him guilty of any of the bad things you accuse him of.
VERSE 15...NO, NOT YET HEROD; FOR I SENT YOU TO HIM; AND, LO, NOTHING WORTHY OF DEATH IS DONE UNTO HIM.
Herod did not find him guilty, for Herod sent him back to us. There is nothing this man has done to deserve death. Pilate though that Herod would not have sent Jesus back unless he did not find him guilty. Herod and Pilate did not find Jesus guilty but the pressure on them made Pilate find Jesus guilty.
VERSE 16...I WILL THEREFORE CHASTISE HIM, AND RELEASE HIM.
Pilate tried to reason with the people by saying, I will have him whipped, then, and let him go. I believe that if he believed Jesus was innocent he should have completely set Him free. But he was trying to please the Jews. So he found him guilty. There are people today that wants to please the people instead of pleasing God.
VERSES 17-19...(FOR OF NECESSITY HE MUST RELEASE ONE UNTO THEM AT THE FEAST). AND THEY CRIED OUT ALL AT ONCE, SAYING, AWAY WITH THIS MAN, AND RELEASE UNTO US BARABBAS; (WHO FOR A CERTAIN SEDITION MADE IN THE CITY, AND FOR MURDER, WAS CAST UNTO PRISON).
At each pass-over feast Pilate had to set free one prisoner for them. The whole crowd cried out, kill him. Set Barabbas free for us. Barabbas had been put in prison for a riot that had taken place in the city, and for murder. The custom of releasing a prisoner at Passover is not attested outside the Gospels. But this kind of thing was done elsewhere. It was clear that they wanted to kill Jesus and release Barabbas.
VERSES 20-21...PILATE THEREFORE, WILLING TO RELEASE JESUS, SPAKE AGAIN TO THEM. BUT THEY CRIED SAYING, CRUCIFY HIM, CRUCIFY HIM.
Pilate wanted to set Jesus free, so he called out to the crowd again. But they shouted back, to the cross with him. To the cross. Pilate did not give up quickly, but the crowd reject what he wanted to do and that was release Jesus. They wanted to crucify Jesus so they rejected Pilate’s what he said for them to do. They wanted to get rid of Jesus. There are some people today that would like to get rid if Jesus.
VERSE 22...AND HE SAID UNTO THEM THE THIRD TIME, WHY , WHAT EVIL HATH HE DONE? I HAVE FOUND NO CAUSE OF DEATH IN HIM; I WILL THEREFORE CHASTISE HIM, AND LET HIM GO.
Pilate said to them the third time; But what crime has he committed? I cannot find anything he has done to deserve death. I will have him whipped and set him free. Jesus did not deserve to be whipped, but Pilate was trying to find a way out because he did not find Him guilty.
VERSE 23...AND THEY WERE INSTANT WITH LOUD VOICES, REQUIRING THAT HE MIGHT BE CRUCIFIED. AND THE VOICES OF THEM AND OF THE CHIEF PRIESTS PREVAILED.
The people kept on shouting at the top of their voices that Jesus should be nailed to the cross; and finally their shouting won because they insistent. There seam to be a mob making up among the people. Pilate did not want a mob to make up. I believe he feared for his life.
VERSES 24-25...AND PILATE GAVE SENTENCE THAT IT SHOULD BE AS THEY REQUIRED. AND HE RELEASED UNTO THEM HIM THAT FOR SEDITION AND MURDER WAS CAST INTO PRISON, WHOM THEY HAD DESIRED; BUT HE DELIVERED JESUS TO THEIR WILL.
Pilate passed he sentence on Jesus that they were asking for . He set free the man they wanted, the one who had been put in prison for riot and murder, and turned Jesus over to them to do as they wished. The Jews were responsible for Jesus’ death. It was not Pilate nor his Romans who called for Jesus execution; it was the Jewish chief priests and their followers.
The devil is that consistence about God’s people today. He would like to see them all dead. I believe that he knows that he has not long to work, so he is working 24 hours a day trying to set traps for God’s people.
