LUKE 23:32-43 THE CRUCIFIXION
VERSE 32-33...AND THERE WERE ALSO TWO OTHER, MALEFACTORS, LED WITH HIM TO BE PUT TO DEATH. AND WHEN THEY WERE COME TO THE PLACE, WHICH IS CALLED CALVARY, THERE THEY CRUCIFIED HIM, AND THE MALEFACTORS, ONE ON THE RIGHT HAND, AND THE OTHER ON THE LEFT.
They took two others also, both of them criminals, to be put to death with Jesus. when they came to the place called Calvary or the Skull, they nailed Jesus to the cross there, and the two criminals, one on his right and one on his left. It was brought out that Jesus was crucified between the other two was the fact that he was crucified between two criminals to bring out the fact that he was executed between two criminals. In his death Jesus was in the midst of transgressors.
VERSE 34....THEN SAID JESUS, FOR GIVE THEM; FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO. AND THEY PARTED HIS RAIMENT, AND CAST L0TS.
Jesus said, forgive them Father. They don’t know what they are doing. They divided his clothes among themselves by throwing dice. We should accept the words of THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO. Some people says that these words are not being genuine. That is a trike of the devil. I believe that in the word them, he was talking about the ones that executed him and the Jews who were responsible for the crucifixion and the Romans who carried it out.
VERSE 35..AND THE PEOPLE STOOD BEHOLDING. AND THE RULERS ALSO WITH THEM DERIDED HIM, SAYING, HE SAVE OTHERS; LET HIM SAVE HIMSELF, IF HE BE CHRIST, THE CHOSEN OF GOD.
The people stood there watching, while the Jewish leaders made fun of him; He save other; let him save himself, if he is the messiah whom God has chosen. I believe that they addressed one another, not Jesus, as they spoke of his saving activities. What they did not realize was that He went to the cross for you and me. His blood that He shed on the Cross was for the saving of our souls.
VERSE 36-37...AND THE SOLDIERS ALSO MOCKED HIM, COMING TO HIM, AND OFFERING HIM VINEGAR. AND SAYING, IF THOU BE THE KING OF THE JEWS, SAVE THYSELF.
The soldiers also made fun of him; they came up to him and offered him vinegar, and said, Save yourself, if you are the king of the Jews. I believe that the soldiers used the vinegar as part of their mockery.
VERSE 38...AND A SUPERSCRIPTIONS ALSO WAS WRITTEN OVER HIM IN LETTERS OF GREEK, AND LATIN, AND HEBREW, THIS IS THE KING OF HE JEWS.
These words were written above him; THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Pilate was proclaiming that Jesus died as king of the Jews. I believe that Pilate was taking a grim revenge on the Jewish leaders who had hounded him. He claimed Him to be Royalty.
VERSE 39....AND ONE OF THE MALEFACTORS WHICH WERE HANGED RAILED ON HIM, SAYING, IF THOU BE CHRIST, SAVE THYSELF AND US.
One of the criminals hanging there threw insults at Him; aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us.
VERSE 40-41...BUT THE OTHER ANSWERING REBUKED HIM, SAYING , DOST NOT THOU FEAR GOD, SEEING THOU ART IN THE SAME CONDEMNATIONS? AND WE INDEED JUSTLY; FOR WE RECEIVE THE DUE REWARD OF OUR DEEDS; BUT HIS MAN HATH DONE NOTHING AMISS.
The other one that hanged on a cross rebuked him, saying; Don’t you fear God? Here we all are under the same sentence. Ours, is only right, for we are getting what we deserve for what we did; but he has done no wrong. The changed thief goes on to make the point that they were punished justly. They have broken laws and they must pay, but Jesus; he has done nothing wrong.
VERSE 42-43...AND HE SAID UNTO JESUS, LORD, REMEMBER ME WHEN THOU COMEST INTO THY KINGDOM. AND JESUS SAID UNTO HIM, VERILY I SAY UNTO THEE, TO DAY SHALT THOU BE WITH ME IN PARADISE.
One of the men on the cross, said to Jesus remember me Jesus, when you come as king. Jesus said to him, I tell you this; today you will be in paradise with me. This shows that he realized at least that death would not be the end of everything for him.
Jesus’ words gave him more than he had asked for. He found out that death was on the way to the kingdom. He realized that day he would enter paradise.
