LUKE 23:44-49
THE DEATH OF JESUS
VERSES 44-45...AND IT WAS ABOUT THE SIXTH HOUR, AND THERE WAS A DARKNESS OVER ALL THE EARTH UNTIL THE NINTH HOUR. AND THE SUN WAS DARKENED, AND THE VAIL OF THE TEMPLE WAS RENT IN THE MIDST.
It was about twelve o’clock when the sun stopped shining and darkness covered the whole country until three o’clock; And the curtain hanging in the temple was split in two. Luke was saying that for three hours there was darkness over the whole land. The tearing of the curtain of the temple, the curtain that separated the holy of holies from the rest of the Temple. This tearing of the curtain at this time gives to the truth that the death of Jesus has made the way open into the very presence of God.
VERSE 46...AND WHEN JESUS HAD CRIED WITH A LOUD VOICE, HE SAID , FATHER , INTO THY HANDS I COMMEND MY SPIRIT; AND HAVING SAID THUS, HE GAVE UP THE GHOST.
Jesus’ last words are a beautiful expression of trust in the heavenly Father. We see here that Jesus cried out in a loud voice saying Father. In your hands I place my spirit. He said this and died. Jesus died for sinners with these words; MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAST THOU FORSAKEN ME? MATT. 27:46. Jesus was doing the will of the Father.
VERSE 47...NOW WHEN THE CENTURION SAW WHAT WAS DONE, HE GLORIFIED GOD, SAYING , CERTAINLY THIS WAS A RIGHTEOUS MAN.
The arm officer saw what had happened, and he praise God, saying, certainly he was a good and upright man. The death of the righteous must accord with the will of God if we go to heaven.
VERSE 48... AND ALL THE PEOPLE THAT CAME TOGETHER TO THAT SIGHT, BEHOLDING THE THINGS WHICH WERE DONE, SMOTE THEIR BREASTS, AND RETURNED.
When the people who had gathered there to watch the spectacle saw what happened, they all went back home beating their breasts. They had no great interest in Jesus. They came to be entertained but they left there saddened by it all. They went home with grief instead of joy. I believe that was the reason that 3000 believed in Jerusalemites and were saved.
VERSE 49...AND ALL HIS ACQUAINTANCE, AND THE WOMEN THAT FOLLOWED HIM FROM GALILEE, STOOD AFAR OFF, BEHOLDING THESE THINGS.
All those who knew Jesus personally, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood off at a distance to see these things.
