LUKE 23:50-56
THE BURIAL OF JESUS
VERSES 50-51..AND , BEHOLD, THERE WAS A MAN NAMED JOSEPH, A COUNSELLOR; AND HE WAS A GOOD MAN, AND A JUST; (THE SAME HAD NOT CONSENTED TO THE COUNSEL AND DEED OF THEM;) HE WAS OF ARIMATHEA, A CITY OF THE JEWS WHO ALSO HIMSELF WAITED FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD.
There was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a good and honorable man. And waited for the coming of the kingdom of God. Although a member of the council, he had not agree with their decision and action.
He have been absent, for the vote was unanimous. Luke refers to his good character and to him looking for the kingdom of God. He must have been a follower of Jesus.
VERSES 52-53...THIS MAN WENT UNTO PILATE, AND BEGGED THE BODY OF JESUS. AND HE TOOK IT DOWN, AND WRAPPED IT IN LINEN, AND LAID IT IN A SEPULCHRE THAT WAS HEWN IN STONE, WHEREIN NEVER MAN BEFORE WAS LAID.
It was necessary to get Pilate’s permission. So Joseph went into the presence of Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then he took the body down from the cross, wrapped it in a linen cloth, and placed it in a grave which had been dug out of the rock—a new grave which had never been used. We find in Matt. 27:60..that Joseph
had prepared this tomb for himself. So Jesus was laid in a borrowed tomb.
VERSE 54...AND THAT DAY WAS THE PREPARATION, AND THE SABBATH DREW ON.
It was Friday, and the Sabbath was about to begin. Friday was the day when people prepared for the Sabbath. No work could be done on the Sabbath. So the burial had to be completed as soon as possible.
VERSES 55-56...AND THE WOMEN ALSO, WHICH CAME WITH HIM FROM GALILEE, FOLLOWED AFTER, AND BEHELD THE SEPULCHRE, AND HOW HIS BODY WAS LAID. AND THEY RETURNED, AND PREPARED SPICES AND OINTMENTS; AND RESTED THE SABBATH DAY ACCORDING TO THE COMMANDMENT.
The women who had followed Jesus from Galilee went with Joseph and saw the grave and how Jesus’ body was laid in it. Then they went back home and prepared the spices and ointments for his body. On the Sabbath they rested, as the law commanded. They placed the body in the tomb and then the women went off to the places where they were staying and prepared the necessary ingredients for a proper anointing when the Sabbath had passed.
