LUKE 24:1-12 THE RESURRECTION
VERSE 1...NOW UPON THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK, VERY EARLY IN THE MORNING THEY CAME UNTO THE SEPULCHER, BRINGING THE SPICES WHICH THEY HAD PREPARED, AND CERTAIN OTHERS WITH THEM.
Real early on Sunday morning the women went to the grave carrying the spices they had prepared. The women took the spices shows that they had in mind the completion of Jesus’ burial. These women were a deticated women.
VERSES 2-3. AND THEY FOUND THE STONE ROLLED AWAY FROM THE SEPULCHER. AND THEY ENTERED IN, AND FOUND NOT THE BODY OF THE LORD JESUS.
As the women headed to the sepulcher they taught about the moving of the stone, because it was very heavy. The women found the stone rolled away from the entrance to the grave, so they went on in; but they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
VERSE 4...AND IT CAME TO PASS, AS THEY WERE MUCH PERPLEXED THEREABOUT, BEHOLD, TWO MEN STOOD BY THEM IN SHINING GARMENTS;
The women stood there uncertain about this, when suddenly two men in bright shining clothes stood by them. The women were at a lost to what had happen but two angels stood by them. One of the angels spoke to the women.
VERSES 5-7..AND AS THEY WERE AFRAID, AND BOWED DOWN THEIR FACES TO THE EARTH, THEY SAID UNTO THEM, WHY SEEK YE THE LIVING AMONG THE DEAD? HE IS NOT HERE, BUT IS RISEN; REMEMBER HOW HE SPAKE UNTO YOU WHEN HE WAS YET IN GALILEE, SAYING, THE SON OF MAN MUST BE DELIVERED INTO THE HANDS OF SINFUL MEN, AND BE CRUCIFIED, AND THE THIRD DAY RISE AGAIN.
The women were full of fear, they bowed down head to the ground,( was a mark of respect) as the men said to them; why are you looking among the dead for one who is alive? He is not here; He has risen. Remember what he said to you while he was in Galilee; the Son of Man must be handed over to sinful men, be nailed to the cross and be raised to life on the third day. Jesus is not to be thought of as dead. He is not to be sought among the dead. The truth is the Father raised Him from the dead.
VERSES 8-9...AND THEY REMEMBERED HIS WORDS, AND RETURNED FORM THE SEPULCHER, AND TOLD ALL THESE THINGS UNTO THE ELEVEN, AND TO ALL THE REST.
Then the women remembered his words that they had heard before. They saw that Jesus had intended His word to them to be taken literally. They returned from the grave, and told all these things to the eleven disciples and all the other followers of Jesus in the locality.
VERSE 10....IT WAS MARY MAGDALENE, AND JOANNA, AND MARY THE MOTHER OF JAMES, AND OTHER WOMEN THAT WERE WITH THEM, WHICH TOLD THESE THINGS UNTO THE APOSTLES.
These three women and the other women with them told these things to the apostles what they had seen and heard.
VERSE 11...AND THEIR WORDS SEEMED TO THEM AS IDLES TALES, AND THEY BELIEVED THEM NOT.
The apostles thought that what the women said was nonsense, and did not believer them. The apostles were sceptical of what the women told them. Even the women that they knew well. They refuse to believe.
VERSE 12...THEN AROSE PETER, AND RAN UNTO THE SEPULCHER; AND STOOPING DOWN, HE BEHELD THE LINEN CLOTHES LAID BY THEMSELVES, AND DEPARTED, WONDERING IN HIMSELF AT THAT WHICH WAS COME TO PASS.
Peter got up and ran to the grave; he bent down and went into the tomb and saw the grave cloths and nothing else. Then he went back home wondering at what has happened. Peter did not yet believe in the resurrection for he went home wondering at what had happened. But at least he had been impressed.
