LUKE 24:13-24 THE WALK TO EMMAUS–
VERSES 13-14...AND, BEHOLD, TWO OF THEM WENT THAT SAME DAY TO A VILLAGE CALLED EMMA’US WHICH WAS FROM JERUSALEM ABOUT THREESCORE FURLONGS. AND THEY TALKED TOGETHER OF ALL THESE THINGS WHICH HAD HAPPENED.
And on that same day two of the disciples were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking to each other about all the things that has happened. Luke does not name the subject that they were talking about, but they must been talking about the stories of the empty tomb and of the angels.
VERSES 15-16....AND IT CAME TO PASS, THAT, WHILE THEY COMMUNED TOGETHER AND REASONED, JESUS HIMSELF DREW NEAR, AND WENT WITH THEM. BUT THEIR EYES WERE HOLDEN THAT THEY SHOULD NOT KNOW HIM.
As the disciples talked and discussed, Jesus himself drew near and walked along with them. They saw him, but some how did not recognize him. For some reason on this occasion the disciples were somehow prevented from recognizing Jesus. Only later they came to know Him. I believe that we cannot see the risen Christ, although he be walking with us, unless he wills to disclose himself.
VERSES 17-18...AND HE SAID UNTO THEM, WHAT MANNER OF COMMUNICATIONS ARE THESE THAT YE HAVE ONE TO ANOTHER, AS YE WALK, AND ARE SAD? AND THE ONE OF THEM, WHOSE NAME WAS CLEOPAS, ANSWERING SAID UNTO HIM. ART THOU ONLY A STRANGER IN JERUSALEM, AND HAST NOT KNOWN THE THINGS WHICH ARE COME TO PASS THERE IN THESE DAYS?
Jesus said unto them, what are you talking about, back and forth, as you walk along? They stood still, with sad faces. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, are you the only man living in Jerusalem who does not know what has been happening there these last few days? Cleopas thought that everyone knew what had been happening. He thought that Jesus must be a visit to Jerusalem by Him asking that question. Because everybody were talking about it.
VERSES 19-20...AND HE SAID UNTO THEM, WHAT THINGS? AND THEY SAID UNTO HIM, CONCERNING JESUS OF NAZARETH, WHICH WAS A PROPHET MIGHTY IN DEED AND WORD BEFORE GOD AND ALL THE PEOPLE; AND HOW THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND OUR RULERS DELIVERED THEM TO BE CONDEMNED TO DEATH, AND HAVE CRUCIFIED HIM.
Jesus said what things that happened to Jesus of Nazareth, and they answered, this man was a prophet, and was considered by God and by all the people to be mighty in words and deeds. Our chief priests and rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they nailed him to the cross. They had been impressed both by his deeds and his words and the characterized them alike as mighty. They had seen the power of Jesus in action. They told that the rulers had destroyed Him. The chief blame was piut on the Jews.
VERSE 21...BUT WE TRUSTED THAT IT HAD BEEN HE WHICH SHOULD HAVE REDEEMED ISRAEL; AND BESIDE ALL THIS, TODAY IS THE THIRD DAY SINCE THESE THINGS WERE DONE.
They said that they were in hope that he would be the one who was going to redeem Israel. They has seen him as he promised deliverer. It had been three days since this had happen. Redemption in the world signified deliverance on payment of a price. God should not have had to pay a price to any one. But He paid a price for our redemption.
Verses 22-24...YEA, AND CERTAIN WOMEN ALSO OF OUR COMPANY MADE US ASTONISHED, WHICH WERE EARLY AT THE SEPULCHRE; AND WHEN THEY FOUND NOT HIS BODY, THEY CAME, SAYING THAT THEY HAD ALSO SEEN A VISION OF ANGELS, WHICH SAID THAT HE WAS ALIVE. AND CERTAIN OF THEM WHICH WERE WITH US WENT TO THE SEPULCHRE, AND FOUND IT EVEN SO AS THE WOMEN HAD SAID; BUT HIM THEY SAW NOT.
Some of the women of the group surprised the disciples; they went at dawn to the grave. But could not find His body. They came back saying they had seen vision of angels who told them that He was a live. Some of disciples went to the grave and found it exactly as the women had said, but they did not see him. Jesus is alive today ready to forgive anyone of their sins and set them free from a sinful life.
