LUKE 25-35
THE WALK TO EMMAUS LESSEN 2
VERSES 25-26...THEN HE SAID UNTO THEM, O FOOLS, AND SLOW OF HEART TO BELIEVE ALL THAT THE PROPHETS HAVE SPOKEN; OUGHT NOT CHRIST TO HAVE SUFFERED THESE THINGS, AND TO ENTER INTO HIS GLORY?
Jesus said to the two men, with a sharp rebuke, how foolish you are, how slow you are to believe everything that prophets said. Was it not necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and enter his glory. Jesus points out that the root of the trouble was their failure to accept what is taught in Bible prophecy. The prophets has spoken plainly enough, but had not been quick enough to grasp what was meant. Written in the prophets as it was, it had to happen. Christ must suffer. He must also enter into his glory. God is not defeated. He triumphs through the suffering of christ.
VERSE 27...AND BEGINNING AT MOSES AND ALL THE PROPHETS, HE EXPOUNDED UNTO THEM IN ALL THE SCRIPTURES THE THINGS CONCERNING HIMSELF.
Jesus explained to them what was said about him in all the Scriptures, beginning with the books of Moses and the writings of all the prophets. We should understand that throughout the Old Testament a consistent divine purpose is worked out, a purpose that in the end meant and must mean the cross.
Throughout the Old Testament the terribleness of sin and the deep love of God. And this combination made Calvary inevitable.
VERSES 28-29.....AND THEY DREW NIGH UNTO THE VILLAGE, WHITHER THEY WENT; AND HE MADE AS THOUGH HE WOULD HAVE GONE FURTHER. BUT THEY CONSTRAINED HIM, SAYING, ABIDE WITH US; FOR IT IS TOWARD EVENING, AND THE DAY IS FAR SPENT, AND HE WENT IN TO TARRY WITH THEM.
They came near the town that they were headed and Jesus acted as if he were going farther, but they held him back, saying, stay with us; the day is almost over and it is getting dark. So he went in to stay with them. There was no reason for thinking that he would have stayed unless they had not pressed him to stay. The two were very impressed with his exposition of the Bible.
Verses 30-31....AND IT CAME TO PASS, AS HE SAT AT MEAT WITH THEM, HE TOOK BREAD, AND BLESSED IT, AND BRAKE, AND GAVE TO THEM. AND THEIR EYES WERE OPENED, AND THEY KNEW HIM; AND HE BANISHED OUT OF THEIR SIGHT.
He sat at the table with them, took the bread, and said the blessing; then he broke the bread and gave to them. Bread was broken at the prayer of thanksgiving before a meal. Their eyes were opened and they recognized him; but he disappeared from their sight. They could have knew by seeing the nail-marks in His hands. As they knew Him he vanished.
VERSE 32... AND THEY SAID ONE TO ANOTHER DID NOT OUR HEART BURN WITHIN US, WHILE HE TALKED WITH US BY THE WAY, AND WHILE HE OPENED TO US THE SCRIPTURES.
The recognition that it was the Lord with whom they had walked explained to them what had happened on the journey. The two disciples said to each other, wasn’t it like a fire burning in us when he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us. Jesus explaining the Bible to them, had stirred them deeply. They knew now why it did because they saw it was Jesus.
VERSES 33-35...AND THEY ROSE UP THE SAME HOUR, AND RETURNED TO JERUSALEM, AND FOUND THE ELEVEN GATHERED TOGETHER, AND THEM THAT WERE WITH THEM. SAYING, THE LORD IS RISEN INDEED, AND HATH APPEARED TO SIMON. AND THEY TOLD WHAT THINGS WERE DONE IN THE WAY, AND HOW HE WAS KNOWN OF THEM IN BREAKING OF BREAD.
Their reaction was to go and tell the others. They got up at once and went back to Jerusalem, where they found the eleven disciples gathered together with the others. And saying, the Lord is risen. Simon has seen him. The two then explained to them what had happened on the road, and how they had recognized the Lord when he broke the bread. They believed Simon because if he said something they could believe it.
