LUKE 24:36-53
JESUS APPEARS TO HIS DISCIPLES.
VERSE 36...AND AS THEY THUS SPAKE, JESUS HIMSELF STOOD IN THE MIDST OF THEM, AND SAITH UNTO THEM, PEACE BE UNTO YOU.
While the two were telling the disciples what had happen, suddenly the Lord Him-self stood among them and said to them peace be with you. Jesus appeared in their mist through closed doors according to John.
VERSE 37....BUT THEY WERE TERRIFIED AND AFFRIGHTED, AND SUPPOSED THAT THEY HAD SEEN A SPIRIT.
The disciples were full of fear and terror, they thought that they were seeing a ghost. Jesus who had risen suddenly appear in their midst was a shock to them.
He appeared to them even thought the doors were locked.
VERSES 38-40...AND HE SAID UNTO THEM, WHY ARE YE TROUBLED? AND WHY DO THOUGHTS ARISE IN YOUR HEARTS? BEHOLD MY HANDS AND MY FEET, THAT IT IS I MYSELF; HANDLE ME, AND SEE; FOR A SPIRIT HATH NOT FLESH AND BONES, AS YE SEE ME HAVE. AND WHEN HE HAD THUS SPOKEN, HE SHEWED THEM HIS HANDS AND HIS FEET.
Jesus said to them; why are you troubled? Why are these doubts coming up in your minds. Jesus said look at my hands and my feet and see that it is I, myself. Feel me, and you will see, for a ghost doesn’t have flesh and bones, as you can see I have. Jesus said this and showed them his hands and feet. Jesus was trying to calm and reassure the disciples. He puts their doubts and put them out in the open and deals with them. The reference to flesh and bones show that Jesus resurrection body had physical aspects. He invited them look at the marks of his wounds to verifying that He was Jesus.
VERSES 41-43...AND WHILE THEY YET BELIEVED NOT FOR JOY, AND WONDERED, HE SAID UNTO THEM, HAVE YE HERE ANY MEAT? AND THEY GAVE HIM A PIECE OF A BROILED FISH, AND OF AN HONEY-COMB. AND HE TOOK IT ,AND DID EAT BEFORE THEM,
They still could not believe, they were so full of joy and wonder; so he asked them, do you have anything to eat here? They gave him a piece of cooked fish, which he took and ate before them. The disciples seemed to think that this was just too good to be true.
VERSE 44...AND HE SAID UNTO THEM, THESE ARE THE WORDS WHICH I SPAKE UNTO YOU, WHILE I WAS YET WITH YOU, THAT ALL THINGS MUST BE FULFILLED, WHICH WERE WRITTEN IN THE LAW OF MOSES, AND IN THE PROPHETS, AND IN THE PSALMS, CONCERNING ME.
Then Jesus said to them; these are the very things I told you while I was still with you; everything written about me in the law of Moses. The writings of the prophets, and the Psalms had to come true. Jesus told them that they should not be surprised at what had happened. Because I told you what was going to happen.
VERSES 45-46...THEN OPENED HE THEIR UNDERSTANDING, THAT THEY MIGHT UNDERSTAND THE SCRIPTURES, AND SAID UNTO THEM, THUS IT IS WRITTEN, AND THUS IT BEHOVED CHRIST TO SUFFER, AND TO RISE FROM THE DEAD THE THIRD DAY.
Jesus opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them; this is what is written; that the messiah must suffer and be raised from death on the third day.
VERSES 47-48..AND THAT REPENTANCE AND REMISSION OF SINS SHOULD BE PREACHED IN HIS NAME AMONG ALL NATIONS, BEGINNING AT JERUSALEM. AND YE ARE WITNESSES OF THESE THINGS.
We know that we are to preach the word in His name about repentance and the forgiveness of sins. Jesus said that it must be preached to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem. IN HIS NAME connects this repentance and forgiveness with what Jesus is and has done. Luke is speaking about what Christ has done for people and what is available through him. Forgiveness is available for all people. the gospel is to be preached to all nations.
VERSE 49....AND BEHOLD, I SEND THE PROMISE OF MY FATHER UPON YOU; BUT TARRY YE IN THE CITY OF JERUSALEM, UNTIL YE BE ENDURED WITH POWER FROM ON HIGH.
Jesus said he will send upon every one that the Father had promised. But we must tarry in the church or prayer room for the promise of the Holy Ghost. Which will us the power to work for the Lord.
VERSES 50-51...AND HE LED THEM OUT AS FAR AS TO BETHANY AND HE LIFTED UP HIS HANDS, AND BLESSED THEM. AND IT CAME TO PASS, WHILE HE BLESSED THEM, HE WAS PARTED FROM THEM, AND CARRIED UP INTO HEAVEN.
Jesus led them out of the city as far as Bethany, where he raised his hands and blessed them. As he was blessing them, he departed from them and was taken up into heaven.
VERSES 52-53...AND THEY WORSHIPPED HIM, AND RETURNED TO JERUSALEM WITH GREAT JOY. AND WERE CONTINUALLY IN THE TEMPLE, PRAISING AND BLESSING GOD.
The disciples worshiped Jesus and went back into Jerusalem. Filled with great joy, and spent all their time in the temple giving thanks to God. the passion and resurrection and now the ascension had convince them that Jesus was divine.
