WALKING IN THE LIGHT
I JOHN 1:7. IF WE WALK IN THE LIGHT, AS HE IS IN THE LIGHT, WE HAVE FELLOW-SHIP ONE WITH ANOTHER, AND THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST HIS SON CLEANSETH US FROM ALL SIN.
I. FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD KEY TO SANCTIFICATION. I JOHN 1:5-7.
The word sanctify appears about seventh times in the King James version of the Bible. It pictures people being set apart for God’s use, of being pure and holy.
The apostle John made it clear how important it is to live a sanctified life. Its importance is found in the nature of God.
Light describes God’s holiness and purity. John emphasized this with the second part of I John 1:5, IN HIM IS NO DARKNESS AT ALL.
Not even a shadow of any sin is in God. He is absolutely pure and holy.
Since God is holy and pure, it makes sense that those who know Him and have Him in their lives should reflect His holiness.
Some people claim to know God, yet live in ways that are not pleasing in His sight. To claim a relationship with God and not reflect His holy nature is a lie.
On the other hand, to live a godly life as a Christians makes possible our fellowship with God.
Since God is light, if we live a holy life and avoid wickedness, we are able to enjoy fellowship; with Him daily.
Daily fellowship with God and obeying what He wants us to do is the key to sanctified living.
Without God’s presence in our lives, sanctified living is impossible.
Many today laugh at the idea of seeking holiness in one’‘s life. They make it appear that choosing to live as life of moral purity places us on the outside of the good times everyone else is enjoying. This is far from the truth. Godly Christians live not as outsiders, but as the truest kind of insider.
II. CONFESSION; KEY TO CONTINUED SANCTIFICATION. I JOHN 1:8-10.
Through the years, some people have misinterpreted sanctification as meaning perfection. John wrote that a claim of sinless perfection is self-deception. The fact believers sometimes sin seems to make an illusion of the hope of sanctified living.
The answer to this is in confessing; if we confess our sins, God will forgive us and cleanse us from our sins. If we do sin, God’s forgiveness puts us back on the road of holy living.
