THE MARRIAGE RELATIONSHIP
I PETER 3:1...LIKE WISE, YE WIVES, BE IN SUBJECTION TO YOUR OWN HUSBANDS; THAT, IF ANY OBEY NOT THE WORD, THEY ALSO MAY WITHOUT THE WORD BE WON BY THE CONVERSATI0N OF THE WIVES.
I PETER 3:7..LIKEWISE, YE HUSBANDS, DWELL WITH THEM ACCORDING TO KNOWLEDGE, GIVING HONOUR UNTO THE WIFE, AS UNTO THE WEAKER VESSEL, AND AS BEING HEIRS TOGETHER OF THE GRACE OF LIFE; THAT YOUR PRAYERS BE NOT HINDERED.
(I PETER 3:1-7)
I. THE CHRISTIAN WIFE.
These were persecuted Christians living out-side of their homeland under Roman rule. Christianity presented a threat to the pagan society because of its treatment of each other as equals, including husbands and wives, as well as masters and slaves.
Christian women were advised by Peter how to live in their particular situation. There existed a danger of a Christian woman pressing her freedom in a way that would bring injury to her and the faith. Wives are told to submit to their husbands. Subordination here refers to an acceptance of the woman’s role in the home as a wife.
Peter devoted attention to this matter because of the difficult position these women were placed in after conversion. This was especially true since women in that time were expected to follow the religion of their husbands.
These men who had not responded to the preached word of God needed to see the word being lived by their wives.
Unspoken acting is more powerful than unperformed speaking. Peter suggests that the unsaved husband may be won to the Lord by the wife’s Christian conduct. Chaste conversation coupled with fear can be translated the purity and reverence of your lives.
Peter told the women not to depend on gaudy dress in their effort to win their husbands to the Lord. It was a mistake to overdress using too many accessories.
What matters is not your outward appearance- the styling of your hair, the jewelry you wear, the cut of your clothes----but your inner disposition.
THE HIDDEN MAN OF THE HEART refers to the personality of the woman as she is made be beautiful by the ministry of the Holy Ghost in her life, thereby lifting up Jesus Christ.
Concerning the phrase THAT WHICH IS NOT CORRUPTIBLE, means what ever pertains to outward decoration, however beautiful and costly, is fading; but that which pertains to the soul is enduring. As the soul is immortal, so all that tends to adorn that will be immortal too; as the body is mortal, so all with which it can be invested is decaying and will soon be destroyed.
A MEEK AND QUIET SPIRT. V. 4 describes the gentle way in which a wife submits to her husband. This does not suggest weakness, but strength of character which is of great worth in God’s sight.
In I Peter 3:5-6, Peter appealed to Holy Women of the past that is, in the Old Testament --as examples for the wives to follow. He lifts up women who were made holy through their faith in God. Their devotion was not to corruptible things, but to God, and this made them beautiful.
A specific feature of their holiness was their submission to their husbands. Sarah is an example. She call Abraham lord indicates that she deferred to Abraham’s leadership in the home thereby indicating her quality of character.
Whose daughters ye are suggests that the women to whom Peter was writing, by adorning themselves with the same attitude as Sarah, would become her children and imitate her as a child imitates her mother.
The Christian wives were not to let anything frighten them from their course. Other women might insult them because of their noble attitude, and even their husbands might resent them, however, God would honor their steadfast commitment to Him and His ways.
II. THE CHRISTIAN HUSBAND.
Here Peter is addressing Christian husbands. For them to dwell with their wives according to knowledge means to live with them in an understanding way.
The husband is to understand what the Bible teaches about his role, and live accordingly.
EPH. 5:25...HUSBANDS, LOVE YOUR WIVES, EVEN AS CHRIST ALSO LOVED THE CHURCH, AND GAVE HIMSELF FOR IT.
GIVING HONOUR UNTO THE WIFE... I PETER 3:7; refers to a husband valuing his spouse. Showing respect to one’s wife was a jarring concept in the ancient world, where women were usually seen as objects rather than individuals of equal worth to men.
Peter calls women the weaker partner. Both men and women are weak before God, but women are weaker in certain ways.
The female has what the man wants–beauty and delicacy. The male has what the female wants—courage and strength. The one is as good in its place as the other. These things God has made an equality between the man the woman, so that there is properly very little superiority on either side.
Peter calls husbands and wives heirs together of the grace of life. That is they are one in marriage, and their vows are irrevocable except on scriptural grounds. They are to enjoy life’s blessings and endure life’s burdens together.
If a man fails to treat his wife as the is verse teachers giving her understanding, sowing her honor and living with her in partnership –his prayers will be hindered. Verse 7.
So a man’s relationship with his wife will either positively or negatively affect his relationship with God.
