James 5:12, “But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea and your nay, be nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.” There are three kind of swearing, # 1- Is to make a solemn declaration wit an appeal to God to confirm it.
# 2- To make a solemn promise, vow. # 3 –The use of profane language , curse.
Let us consider that we are made to glorify our maker, which is our greatest privilege, so our tongue and speaking faculty were given to praise and glorify our maker. To profane His Holy name is an unnatural abuse of it. It makes me sick to hear someone use God’s name with a curse word. We must consider two things here, our blessed Savior who bled and died for os that we could have life, one of His commandments is, “Swear not at all.” James tells us,” But above all things brethren, swear not, lest ye fall into condemnation.
What Christ and James are saying here is, “That a Christian’s word should be good as an oath. There ought to be no cause for people to use oaths. Anything over simple affirming or denying comes from the evil one and Christians should be careful lest they fall into his trap.
Have you ever heard anyone say a curse word, then say,”Sorry it just came out” well if it hadn’t been in there it would not have come out. There is no pleasure in using curse words, but I have seen people that it seems to make them feel big, when it really makes them look little and foolish. Let those that think there is no harm in idle swearing ask themselves whether they expect to repeat that plea when they have to give account of themselves for idle word they speak, when at the judgement. Matt. 36.
